Champions Online

Currently quite bored so tempted to get this, what are peoples impressions, the last two mmo's I played (Conan and War) were letdowns especially conan as I played that for a good few months.

if you're anything like me be prepared to be really confused by the stats etc.

throws you in at the deep end with some set ups.
unless im just slow.

I'm going to play live, although I don't think it'll last too long, it is something to fill the time I have.

I seem have found a seemingly invincible and decently damage dealing class in PVP, one pvp match was bugged and I ended up being the only person on my team, vs another team. I won :S

Power Armour with invuln slotted 2/2, defensive mode, field drones for healing and eye beams 2/2+gauntlet2/2 for damage. Took pyre later on for AOE damage and dot. At level 20 I believe. At 40 pets become much weaker than they were around that level against people :/ Sometimes they don't even heal and just sit there. When that's sorted though even better.

i actually felt the same tbh, it wasn't until I spent some productive time at work researching the stats, what the device things were and the crafting system that it started to make a bit more sense - but even then i don't think i really cracked it.

from the early levels experience (lvl 13 was the highest I got in the open beta) it's quite solo friendly, i did pretty much everything (apart from one boss in the desert and then only because we were all trying to kill it at the same time) on my own. visually it looks ok, the missions are reasonably interesting in terms of some of the story but all amount to the same kill this or collect that - but that's an mmo i guess.

it certainly didn't blow me away when i played it but it didn't put me off either. i'll probably play for a month first, then see how it goes.

This is well known on the official forums, so be careful with this build. Many people have made similar builds, powers have been nerfed and they have been unable to respec that far back. At the very least, keep respecing healing bots and pyre so that you can always change them. Those two will be nerfed for sure. There is still a fair bit of balancing to be done, and this I suspect will continue into launch.

It also seems to ignore the main plus point of Power Armour. The multiple attack powers at once!

I just can't see it lasting, the builds are too open, meaning the majority , except the hardcore who will happily play weaker builds so they fit in for their character, will be using whatever is the most overpowered build, and all respec and rebuild whatever the next overpowered set is.

With some defining features with specific classes you get people who like to play healing classes and won't choose invunerability in a melee class just because its overpowered.

That said, it will always be worked so it will be basic, simple and work on consoles, meaning it just won't ever be as good as it should be and will always be overly simplistic and frankly, dull and easy.

Seriously, a game where you can press one button and have it auto attack and take a mob down without any further interaction is, just beyond stupid. COH the autoattack was basic, massively weak compared to even the most basic attack, slow and would take an age to take down even a lvl 1 mob.

Combat so far, has been dull, quests, dull, doesn't look particularly good at all, which all kind of makes it a poor game.

More people I know who played it hate it as opposed to love it, can't remotely see it lasting with large numbers playing. I honestly see 2-3 major nerfs, everyone changing to the latest uber build before people start getting completely bored with it.

I don't know how much my opinion is based on originally wanting, and thinking it would just be COH with vastly superior graphics so being dissappointed and how much its just a bad game, somewhere in the middle probably.

When I compare it to COH though, quests, combat, the world, the style, the animations, the individual attacks and the general powerful feel of my character were all better.

Going to wait for a trial and see how it is maybe a month or, 3 after launch before seeing if I really want to spend money on it, can't see it having changed enough by then to be worthwhile to be honest.

But you have never seemed to like it drunkenmaster. There ARE SOME overpowered powers, but out of the many powers you can take (up to 16 I think?) these account for, at most 5 of them. The rest are very very well balanced now. And the game hasnt even been released yet!

Actually, this has meant that the 360 controller works amazingly well with the game and is very fun to use (even in PvP).

Auto attack against another player, a boss, or a slightly higher level mob and you are dead. You will only get away with it against the most basic mob. But please, anyone who want to auto attack me in PvP, feel free :)

Its better than in most MMOs.

I know loads who have loved it. Some who even wanted to hate it, but became addicted. Based on the number of subscriptions sold so far, I would say it has become incredibly popular. You clearly just wanted something SUPERIOR to CoH. It isn't superior, but it is different and implements things well. I love features like the ONE server for everyone to keep the world populated, the extensive character customization and the comic style graphics.

I am not saying it is a perfect game by any stretch. There have been some annoying bugs and niggles, but it is one of the best betas I have ever been in, and a lot of others will agree. Plus, most of these problems have now been fixed! Compared to many other MMOs, I think it stands pretty well. Have you even played it recently with the latest patches and changes?

There's been a monumental mess up with the headstart codes that were emailed out.

A lot of them just don't work - the Champions site reports that the code has already been used and cannot be used again. People who ordered from a well known high street gaming retailer are worst hit, including myself. No-one knows who to blame, whether it's Cryptic who gave a bunch of duff codes, or the shop themselves who've stuffed up.

that's why you pre-order from a number of sites, get the codes (if they send it) and cancel the purchase, your garenteed to have one that will work, and the rest you don't loose anything.

only thing I need to wait for now is the actual game case & key so I can unlock my life time subscription!

I phoned the helpline and have been reissued a replacement code over the phone -uanble to test it since the Champs site is down for maintenance...

*Edit*

Code worked - account registered.

Now, just need to get this stupid patcher working.

Yup, if your codes dont work just email/phone up Cryptic and they will give you a new one. Wont see you there til Tuesday sadly since I am working...and have headstart access :(. Oh well, hopefully it will clear up some of the earlier areas.

You don't phone Cryptic, you phone the retailer. Cryptic issued them invalid codes but they recieved new ones late Friday afternoon. They claim they shouldn't be blamed for the invalid codes.
They did however issue an email telling people to wait til the server was up to try the code which was ******* as the code was suppose to be applied before the server came up. If you code wasn't working, it wasn't going to, and the server didn't go up til after the customer services closed.

Just thought i would mention, if anyone ordered from D2D or elsewhere and thought they couldnt get in the head start, I ordered from there and have been playing all evening..............

Just ordered this from steam.

Hope it gone up in quaility since the previous beta comments.

Previous WoW player of 5 years led from boredom of fps playing to this my 2nd mmo :D
