G92s are hardly the pinacle of graphics performance. Plus, there are mobile versions of the 4850 and 4870 that are faster than any g92 based mobile GPU.

The issue is that they're taking their old GPUs from years ago, giving them a new name and slapping a higher price on them. Are you sure you don't see a problem?

It's stifling of innovation. nVidia are supposed to be at the pinacle of innovation , according to themselves anyway, yet they've been one of the least innovative companies in thier primary field in years.

What makes it worse is that they try to 'punnish' people who don't go along with them. Journalists and hardware reviewers that don't follow their strict rules.

They're supposed to be the best, and games optimised for nvidia hardware are 'the way it's meant to be played', yet why do they act so paranoid and controlling?

They're supposed to be the best, so what's with the sneakyness and underhanded measures? They're 'on top' as it is, they need to put the effort they plough into propaganda into innovation and stop being so paranoid.

They think everyone is out to get then while screwing over their customers and everyone else. So who's out to get who now?

Agreed, at least ATI are bringing reasonably priced cards to the table, just hope the 58xx series are well priced.

Nvidia will be seriously shooting themself in the foot if they try and pull another renaming scam they got found out last time and this time will be even worse. If they have nothing right now they would be better being honest then trying these sorts of silly games.

They will be hurting DX11 with this move if the mid/low end 300 cards are DX10 as they will be the most popular to the average user due to the price & we all know that 99% of the time DX10 is not worth a toffee thanks to NV again.

Well, to be honest... It's not the first time Nvidia is doing this.
Let's go back in time... GeForce 4. Rings a bell? That's right, there were 2 product lines: Ti (Titanium) and MX, where Ti supported DirectX 8 and MX was basically renamed GeForce 2 (so no shaders of course).
So what were the results? Lots of people bought MX cards cause they were cheaper, they became very popular (GeForce 4 for like 150$? woot!). This was one of the reasons why the mass introduction of shaders into games was delayed.
The same thing is happening again. One thing is g80 and gt200 which both support DirectX 10. In this case we will have two 300s lines, when the half of it supports DirectX 11 and the other half doesn't.
Thank you very much Nvidia for holding the game industry back! I really am truly glad you are doing this!

That depends on ATi's price range. ATi could be the ones shooting nVidia if they want - keep the prices low and they'll steal all of nVidia's business.

Some users will stick with what they know & will end up with a NV dx10 card instead of a ATI dx11 card even at the same price point.

^ Thats true but then think how massively peed off those people are going to be when they find out they don't have the latest gen card with all the new bell's and whistle's they are going to go off nvidia very quickly. Thats the one thing stopping me believing that nvidia are doing this again it simply is no way to treat loyal customer's and hands so much ammunition to ati to run a campaign against them nvidia would have to be incredibly stupid to do it again after getting caught last time.

^ They will get peed off & dump PC gaming completely & go full out console.
I'm exaggerating of course but peeing off PC gamers at any level if it can be helped is a bad idea as that will make some think more & more of leaving the platform be it because of things like this or over the top DRM.

They don't give **** about the Loyal customer's just look at w7 and phsix even when someone brought a card and paired it with a ati they disabled it.

Maybe the only time they think about their loyal customer's is when they lost a lot of market share and are behind Amd in a big way.

If they go ahead with another naming scam then i really hope people go ati if only to make it clear to nvidia that it isn't acceptable to indulge in shady practices when they cannot compete. As we get nearer the 10th we all know there are gong to be increasing "leaks" from nvidia about how great this and that will be and while thats a bit desperate it is at least semi acceptable but another bout of renaming isn't and they should lose market share if they do go ahead with it.

If you're talking about the rebranding yet again to GT300s, then yeah it has.

All it's taken is some one to have a look in the latest drivers. There are entries from older drivers that state a card to have a specific device ID, the later drives show items with the same device ID, but now with GT300 in their name.

Meaning that current cards are being renamed in the drivers already.

I would have gotten excited about this a few months ago, but I am more excited about the DX11 ATI cards tbh.

I hear that nVidia will be rebranding the current GT200 series cards into the GT3** line just like they did with the 8800GT..

That card spanned 3 generations of cards.. 8800GT>9800GT>GTS250.. I never understood why they rebrand old tech into the latest generation of cards???

Although that guy Charlie Demerjian seems to have a really strong hatred towards nvidia, he has written loads of nasty articles about them.. But I do agree with some of what he says..

Has there been mention in those Drivers of the none Mobile GPU's ?
Wouldnt seem that bad form to me if they were to get rid of there remaining 2## components into the mobile market.

I'm not sure what type of confirmation you want? Drivers written by nVidia itself is pretty strong evidence to suggest they are re-branding.

What's in the drivers confirms they're writing the new drivers with the old cards renamed as new.

As in so that they work the altered BIOSes the new cards will have. (altered in terms of just given a new name).

They did the same with the 9600GSO. They took 8800GSes, flashed them with a new bios that gave them the name 9600GSO and put a new sticker on the HSF then put them in a new rebranded box.

Then to really confuse the issue, they made a weaker card based off the 9600 GT with only 48 shaders and called that a 9600 GSO if I'm remembering all this rightly.

I think they made two variants of it. One with less shaders and less RAM on a lower 128bit board.

I looked it up for kicks and giggles, seems there were several.

They were:

9600 GSO, 96 shaders, 192-bit, 384MB, GDDR3 (AKA 8800 GS)
9600 GSO, 48 shaders, 256-bit, 512MB, GDDR3
9600 GSO, 96 shaders, 192-bit, 768MB, DDR2
9600 GSO, 48 shaders, 128-bit, 512MB, DDR2

The ones with 48 shaders being based on G94.

This is all but confirmed and the fact that nvidia have sunk so low in people's opinions over the last couple of years means it is so easy to believe they are doing it. If nothing else nvidia should stop and think about that as no company can be badly thought of for long and survive and whether we like them or not we need nvidia in the market to keep ati honest if nothing else.
