The god delusion... Religious debate

I'm about half way through, one of my many books, pushing on 15 now that I need to finish.

But I so far have found it very good, I am a stant atheist.

Same here if I'm honest, it's one of a couple of books I'm currently reading and thoroughly enjoying.

I'd class myself as agnostic border line atheist.

God exist? I don't know.

the primary reason why im an agnostic. its the only logical choice for me. theres too many to choose from anyway and not one can provide me with definitive proof that their religion is the true one. i believe you can be moral and just person without man-made religion. if he does exist i dont think he'll be angry with me for sitting on the fence :D

But how do we know (if God exists) that he/she is benevolent? What's to say that God doesn't enjoy causing pain and suffering? Not saying he/she does, but why do we assume that he/she is there to make our life better?

Well nothing wrong with that at all is there? You're comfortable with your religion of non-religion. You should allow people to believe what they believe - as long as no one forces you to believe in something you do not.

I just become disillusioned when people don't think rationally, and when what i see - as something so disbelievable - continues within the majority and adversely effects society.

And being an athiest is dinstinctly non-religious

It is non-believable for you. You need to consider context. And as much rational thought in the quadrant will not absolutely disprove a deity.

Well, the last point was an *****y one of mine. First def of religion is "a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny". I would argue that no belief is a belief itself. So etc...

It's non-beleivable from an objective critical stance, yes it cannot be absoloutely ruled out - but logic comes very close to ruling out all man made religions.

Anyway, this row could go on forever so i think i'll leave it at this :p

Bah. “Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end”

No, science comes close to ruling out all man-made religions, but to believe in science as being able to point our way in a mind-independent reality requires a healthy dose of faith, and therefore deserves no precedence over religious belief.

maybe hes both. theres no way i can confirm this without knowing god.

I don't know for sure, but I believe God exists. I believe God is something infinitely incomprehensible and that no matter how much we evolve as a species we will never comprehend his existence. Hence, belief and belief alone can justify his existence, therefore as long as we retain the capcity to believe, he will exist.

I also follow a religion, purely as a personal guide to becoming a better person.

The god delusion is like every other fanatics book, and should be treated with equal contempt as anything written by people like Fred Phelps, any of the mad immans and David Icke. There are much better philosophy books about than this crap.

i'm not a religious person, i dont smite or disbelieve religion and have no problem with people who like to express how they feel about religion. but i just cant seem to hold a belief in somthing, thus i just say i'm unreligious and dont really believe in a god. i just like to live my life the way i want to and make it as enjoyable as i possibly can, cus imo who cares what happens after death, i just want to enjoy my life and not think about what awaits since its impossible to ever know.

I believe God and the angels were really extra terrestrial beings from another planet. If you look at some of the outlandish claims that all religious texts make there is only one reasonable explanation. If you think about it it makes sense , coming down from the heavens in chariots of fire (alien space craft?) , Eve being born of Adams rib (cloning?) , the exodus of the Isralites by following a giant glowing column in the sky , the ancient pyramids at Giza could not have been built by man in such a short space of time and with such accuracy (we couldnt even reproduce them today) , Ezekiels wheel , following a star to Jesus birth , the immaculate conception. The list goes on.
