Pre-recorded VHS tapes

Beserker, re the laser discs, if you want to get rid of them there is definitely a market for a lot of them (IIRC there is a version of Star Wars that was only ever available to home users on LD), although you may need to try a specialised forum/site to get the best price for them.

I've got a numbered original of the 1997 Star Wars Special Edition set (might even have two - one pristine and never opened). I remember having to wait for Lucasfilm to finish re-mastering them as the first cut was rejected. :D

Found them on a US site listed at $25. Don't know if that price is accurate.

As for Freecycle, or even MM, cataloguing them all seems like an awful lot of effort if they're going to end up being worth nowt. If the interest is genuine though I have no objections (probably next weekend).

And yes, I have replaced a lot of them on DVD. I don't intend replacing them again for a while - some of them will probably never come out on Blu-Ray anyway (e.g. most of the Star Trek series).

This is why I 'worry' when I see folk with hundreds of DVDs, that costed thousands of pounds and will be watched - how many times?

One day these DVDs will be just like the VHS of today. Worth nothing, crap quality and superseded.

Yup, my dvd collection now lives in the loft after I ripped them all to HDD to free up the space.
I can't legally sell them on as that would mean I am duplicating for profit so I have to keep hold of them if I want to have a movie collection.

I love the idea of the unfurling of the tape off the reel, would love to see that! :)

It's tempting to try that, but I'm not clear on how I'd get the reel to free spin - as that's clearly what is required.

Could do it from my hallway for added effect - 10ft drop, straight down.

on the under side of the casing there is a small hole between the two reels, stick a pen in it and the brake gets released :)

Sounds like a plan then*. Tape in hallway, wheelie bin at bottom of stairs, video camera somewhere in the middle. :)

* I make no promises.

I sold a collection of around 100 tapes + vcr on fleabay last year, got around £50 if i remember correctly (started the auction at 99p, i just wanted rid). Also did the same with my laser collection and old player (Pioneer 515 i think), again it did ok and got well over £100 for that lot with again a very cheap starting price. Both were local pick up only as well :)

Some went to the PDSA before they stopped taking them, almost all the rest went to the local recycling centre. Most of the films were replaced by DVD versions.

Somebody mentioned the original star wars cut on vhs. I have the original three films in widescreen format without all the added gumpf that lucas decided to thrown in. Are these worth anything?

well if there's one thing we've learnt from red dwarf is that they'll replace the dvd in future with cassette tapes because they're too small and people kept losing them.

so in hindsight keep them and when everyone changes back just point..... and laugh
