District 9 review...it's looking good... **SPOILERS**

Did anyone else find it bizarre that they were given human names? :p

Nah, that's the exact arrogance we would inflict upon them if it really happened. Look back to slavery, African people forced into the UK and US and given English names. Even now, if you go to multi-cultural cities you'll find all the Phillipinos etc have got name tags like "Teddy" and "Sam" because white westerners can't learn their real names ;)

It was a sly but well implemented undertone of our human nature. I liked it :)

Well I saw this last night and enjoyed it a lot, I didn't think the 'political' point was labored at all, it was just part of the story, I really can't see how anyone can be making a fuss over it. The ending was a bit weak I will admit, it went from climactic finish to end of the film way too fast, but overall the film had good pace I thought.

Well worth watching :)

Good film, but...

whats with the shacky camera? My girlfriend had to leave for 5 mins as she was feeling sick... I saw 3 others leave the cinema at the same time gagging!

Compared to other films I wouldn't say it was too bad.
The film did switch from shakey to normal/steady cam a lot though.

Good point. :)

As for the ending, it's clear they wanted to leave it open for a sequel.

Bad film on so many levels. I know this is OCUK and is geared towards techies and Gamers, So this film is right up your street (sterotyping - sorry)

But IT WAS terrible. smelt like a game to film conversion.

1. too many plot holes - here are a few questions

a. why did they only go in to the ship only once in 20 years?
b. Why was there alien weaponary on the ground if Humans transported them down their? why why why
c. Why wouldn't the aliens fight back if there were tons of big guns?
d. Why was it set in South Africa? pointless excuss to annoy people with the acent.

5/10

Bad film?

Glad you're the only one who thinks so :p because if it's as bad as you say then that makes you a bigger critic than the whole rotten tomatoes community which is some kind of big thing in itself.

I don't think you've done any research into what kind of people enjoyed this film because the audience is far from just techies and gamers.

Is explained in the film, they need the 'fluid'.
b. Why was there alien weaponary on the ground if Humans transported them down their?
I dno, if this were to happen in our world right now could you stop them from landing on day 1 and stashing stuff?
c. Why wouldn't the aliens fight back if there were tons of big guns?
I don't think that was their goal? Seemed like a timid and peaceful race who just wanted to go home
d. Why was it set in South Africa? pointless excuss to annoy people with the acent.
Hehe, i thought that worked well tbh. Where would you want it? America? Too many films come from FREEDOM LAND. These kind of films are what make cinema worth paying for :)

He meant us, the humans, and it's a good point. I'd imagine once we had sipped out all the Prawns we would be all over that ship (they had already cut a hole in the hull remember) to harvest new technologies.

But who looks for plot holes in Sci-Fi films for christ sake? You might as well disregard anything that isn't a factual documentary if you're going to start doing that.

Sorry to nitpick, but from your opinions there I'd assume you'd rather around a 5 or 6 out of 10.

Let's not forget that a 10/10 is a PERFECT movie. An 8 or 9 out of 10 is a damn good one. 6 and 7 are perfectly entertaining and respectable pieces of work, with a 5 being "half a perfect film".

While I'd rank District 9 around a 7 or 8, I think you're aiming a little lower.

10/10 dosent have to be a perfect movie. Scores dont have to link directly to perfection.

1. too many plot holes - here are a few questions

a. why did they only go in to the ship only once in 20 years? They had to cut their way in, and it doesn't say that they were in the ship only once. Even if they were, what else would be there for them? It's technology that they can't use.
b. Why was there alien weaponary on the ground if Humans transported them down their? why why why They made the weapons whilst on the ground, and there could have been some stashed in the command pod that dropped.
c. Why wouldn't the aliens fight back if there were tons of big guns? As was stated, they had lost all initiative and would freely take orders. This was showing a different perspective to the typical Hollywood view of aliens
d. Why was it set in South Africa? pointless excuss to annoy people with the acent. It was meant to highlight todays society and the segregation of white and black people and the real life District 6. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa_under_apartheid

I agree.
It made the whole film far fetched.

Dont take your girlfriend to Irreversible then!

i wonder if anyone anywhere has ever took there GF to see irreversible:D

i didnt notice too much shaky cam in district 9 but then again i watch a lot of mockumentary sorta stuff that uses similar camera techniques (mainly trailer park boys)

Saw it last night

Enjoyed it loads - Sure if you want to analyse it too much you can find plot holes everywhere, but if you take it at face value i think its a nice little romp.
Yes you have to be a sci fi fan to ignore most of these holes ill say that much

I liked the characters, i felt an ounce of compassion for them.
The action scenes and SFX were pretty good not OTT but quirky enough.
Good amounts of humour too.

One of the best films I've seen this year in the genre.

**** ! **** ! cat food !

What more do you want ?

The apartheid and township parody was an interesting angle worked well

Thought this was a great film overall 8-9/10 imo.

Just some thoughts now.

SPOILERS

It had a very half life 2 feel to it. I thought the technology looked fantastic and had a great used look to it rather than all the flashy stuff you get allot nowadays.

There were a few moments that made me cringe a few times lol like the fingernails and some of the lab scenes. The guys who did the cg/effects must have loved splattering body parts all over the place.

I was genuinely rooting for the aliens by the end of the film as they really had been treated like dirt, wouldn't surprise me if they do come back to declare war in the inevitable sequel.

I liked Wikus rampage with the mech at the end, so video game insipired. The ending while being open ended was a bit of an anti-climax imo. I was expecting more to happen.
