Best hot hatch atm?

Mazda 3 MPS. Looks like a joke, will leave a lot of other hot hatches in the dust. The ultimate in stealth.

You haven't seen the new one then? They have totally de-stealthed it, added a ridiculous bonnet scoop and made it look a bit like the new Impreza :(

I'm quite tempted to get the first shape MPS sometime in the near future though.

EDIT: Introducing the Mazda 3 MPS 'Nostril edition'

Had a test drive in a 09 Cupra on Saturday the sales man drove it back and is the craziest driver ever, I was actually scared :p but my god it felt amazing and the handling was great. I actually wanted to trade in the CTR for it but my head got the better of me.

If I didnt have a budget I would go for the hardcore megan.

Yeah I know. It's a pity because you hardly see any of them on the roads but the new styling will probably attract buyers who would have overlooked it.

im guessing you mean in the past couple of years?
i would have said Clio Sport range, but Focus RS is newer and the one id choose

Mate has an 08 Cupra, bloody scary cars.

Supposedly there is an R version coming out soon, now that will be exciting.

Off the top of my head Clio RS of any type from 172 up to 200, Megane R26 (people seem to forget this one now the R26-R is around :) ) or R26-R, Civic Type R, Focus ST/RS, Golf GTi or R32.

Mazda 3 MPS is also another good shout, also got the Astra and Corsa VXR which aren't too bad.

I think that's most of the usual contenders which will all be good, whichever you prefer is down to you though :)

To answer this I would need to know what you consider makes a good hot hatch. Plenty of people recommending good drivers cars (light Renaults), well engineered technology (trick diff blown 5 cylinder Focus RS and high revving CTRs). good well stuck together comfort quick hatches (S3, Golf GTi, Cupra R, Mini Coopers), and powerful straight line machines (Mazda MPS).

Personally I would like something which is:

(1) Reliable
(2) Fun to drive
(3) Comfortable
(4) Good to look at

in that order. So I'd probably go for... erm. hmm. erm.. I'll come back to you on that one :p

How on earth did a FIAT ever make it into this thread?

To the OP, what's your budget, and do you want handling, outright speed, low weight, a bit of comfort or something that will give you a permanent headache?

You mean Corsa VXR?

The last corsa GSi had a 1.6 N/A in it, which in no way blow away most if any hot hatches of todays era.

The GSi turbo with the c20let/ex engine - IIRC at stock they put out 156BHP - which works out over 190 per ton... I wouldn't be seen dead owning one tho.

Did the corsa ever have a Turbo engine as standard? Were they not just engines from the astra/calibra dropped into them?

Without compromises would be the R26-R, you could cope with day to day would be the Focus RS in my mind!

I'm not really sure on the details but I assume the people above are correct... I can't say I was interested in following it too closely...

The new scirocco looks like it has potential as a hot hatch as well (R model is turbo'd to 260+BHP).
