IGN top 25 consoles (broken from the PS3 Slim thread)

360 pad and PS3 pad both have their ups and downs. The d-pad on the 360 controller is just total garbage, much like the L2 + R2 trigger on the PS3 pad are. I also prefer the positioning of the analogue sticks on the 360 pad in comparison to the PS3 pad, just feels more comfortable. Also they are a bit more stiff on the 360 pad are a bit more stiff which I find better. But I like the weight on the PS3 pad over the 360, it's just a bit lighter.

Dreamcast should be top 3 in that top 25 really, for what it brought to the industry - it was way ahead of it's time.

Still living in hope that Sega make another console, hopefully bringing back the cartridge days! Since flash ram is so very cheap now... I hate discs :P

oh please, sony invented this controller with the ps1 it worked then and it works now, if it ain't broke don't fix it

Problem is the ps1 pad was original designed around the R1 and X button, so was comfortable in that position but with focus now on right analogue and R2 it's awkward and uncomfortable.

For me

N64>Megadrive>Snes>PS1>Xbox 360>Gamecube>Dreamcast>Nes. Thats all the consoles I have owned although I was a little young to truely appreciate the NES.

To be honest, I can't think of any reason why the PS3 should be anywhere higher than 15. The 360 came out a whole year before, and the PS3 came out with half the features missing and slowly implemented them over time with none of the effectiveness of the 360 equivalents (voice chat, achievements, unified friends list, custom soundtracks). It didn't help that it was priced at a premium point, yet many couldn't find the proper justification for it.

You have to look at the facts. The PS3 is an awesome console now, but it was like giving birth to a baby that came out sideways and blue in the face.

and over 50% of X360's where so badly manufacured they failed (mainly with RRoD)

I dont personally think PS3 is that good yet either (historically speaking in comparison) but with such horrendous problems maybe the X360 shouldnt have been released a year earlier either......

PS1 was great undoubtedly - but Im sorry the PS2 is the DADDY of all, it has to be from the sheer numbers sold if nothing else

XBox bought online fair enough - but it was also a dismal failure

The only thing I'd change is the 360 maybe a little further down the list. The PS1 and PS2 were certainly greater consoles than the PS3, though, at least at this point during their life spans (don't forget they were basically the best selling consoles ever during their respective periods). For whatever reason, the PS3 is failing horribly in comparison to its predecessors. As for speculating as to why, it may just be because it's doing little but following the natural progression for playstation consoles (i.e. make it more powerful and support a new disk medium as a selling point and support whatever features other console makers seem to find popular). It basically does nothing that the PS1 and PS2 didn't in respect to the technology of their eras. I think if Microsoft doesn't change things up with the next Xbox they could be seeing a similar problem.

Honestly though, I do totally agree with the NES. It basically saved the gaming industry by introducing standards. Without the NES, we'd likely have no high quality games of which to speak of and it was the originating platform for many titles which now proliferate a wide number of consoles.

On the subject of controllers, you have 2 hands, surely there is always going to be a basic layout unless you somehow can move/adjust your hands non humanly?

Muppets lol.

Controllers will ALWAYS have a close resemblance as it works well with our mittens.

Get over all this bickering about silly little things.

Look at the sales graphs for the PS2, PS3 and X360 and I believe the PS3 is actually beating the X360 in regards to sales for its age , so I wouldnt really say its doing "horribly" at all

Nearly everyone seems to expect the latest Sony console to magically make up that 1st year advantage MS had - which just isnt going to happen just yet (now the price has come down that will help, but it needs GT5 and a few other "must have's" before that will happen - and online movies around the world in Home)

No but BD still allows this to be possible. Who says they won't put 2+ games on 1 BD in the future?

Well unless the European Languages take up 3gigs of text changes I raise you:

IDK, it is always hard to rank things like this, I just watched the video and it's pretty much utter tosh.

Lets have a look at the 360 Pad....

Buttons - Y, B, X, A (some may notice that order)

Direct rip from the SNES.

Y, B, X, A Colors

Direct rip from the SNES, but I tell you what... lets rotate the colors so no one notices ;)

Shoulder buttons

Direct Rip from the SNES

Triggers

Direct Rip from the Dreamcast pad

Dreamcast Pad Y, B, X, A

Direct Rip from Snes

Y, B, X, A Colors

SLIGHTLY different to snes (hardly)

Shoulder Triggers ok +1 first pad for these

OR WAS IT?

Saturn Nights Pad  Triggers!

Hell even the Color of the DC pad was half inched from Ninty :p
Xbox pad is a close 2nd to the SNES color match too!

SNES PAd... A button! RED!

Direct Rip from the Atari 2600 Joystick ;)

I cba to type up any more linking but tbh the main pad that didnt really borrow heavily from teh SNES was imho, the N64, which some may argue brought the first pad based analog stick.....

WAIT! Nights Pad again ! :p

^ They didnt just rotate the colours they rotated the buttons, as per the great East west divide over is circle accept or cancel. Confuses me all the time when I switch from my Jap PSP to my EU one.

Keeping the layout the same allowed PS players (et al) to easily port over to xbox. More importantly though it allows ofr easy port of the games. There is nothing wrong with the consoles having similar amounts of buttons and similar placements.

no NEO GEO?.....load of rubbish...this console was more advanced than ANY at the time of release(1990) with games costing a huge £200!!!Shows how advanced the NEO GEO was;)This was the first console to have a removable memory card just like the ps1 except you could take the memory card down to your local arcade, plug the memory card into the arcade machine and continue where you left off from at your home!!!

the neo geo itself wasnt all that advanced. it's interesting actually, when you compare it to a megadrive its largly the same hardware.

mega drive:

Motorola 68000 16/32-bit processor running at 7.67 MHz
Co-processor (Sound Controller): Zilog Z80 8-bit at 3.58 MHz
Memory: 156KB total - 64 KB Main RAM, 64KB VRAM, 8KB Sound RAM. 20 Kb ROM
Display Palette: 512
Onscreen colors: 64
Maximum onscreen sprites: 80
Resolution: 256 × 192, 256 × 224, 320 × 224, 320 × 448
Sound: Yamaha YM2612 5 channel FM and 1 channel FM/PCM, Texas Instruments SN76489 4 channel PSG (Programmable Sound Generator)

neo geo:

Main processor: Motorola 68000, often produced by another manufacturer, running at 12 MHz
Co-processor: Zilog Z80 running at 4 MHz. This is also used as an audio controller.
Main memory (used directly by 68000) 74 Kb, Sound memory (used directly by Z80): 2 KB
Sound: Yamaha YM2612 5 channel FM and 1 channel FM/PCM, Texas Instruments SN76489 4 channel PSG (Programmable Sound Generator)
Color palette: 65,536
Maximum colors on screen: 4,096
Maximum sprites on screen: 384
Display resolution: 320x224 (many games only used the centermost 304 pixels)

obviously it was better, but it was no leap forward in any sense. yes it did bring memory cards to the table, being able to use them in the arcade was a novel feature, but the pricing of the games was so far out of reach that it never took on, not until the playstation was released really.

arguable, its more likely the cost of of the ram at the time. when the neo geo cd was released in 94 (4 years after) the price of the cd's were around $50, much more reasonable.
