Are you going buy one ATI new 5 series or wait to see what Nvidia releases ??

How long are the 58XX series and where's the power connection? I had one of those "oh shi*" moments when installing my GTX 260 as it didn't look like it would fit. It did fit in the end, but only just and it's a good job the power connector was on top of the card.

I'll wait and see how the price/performance/noise measurements work out. Buying brand new tech is almost always a mug's game.

It does make me lol, all these brand haters for no apparent reason.

Same, if one of them went bust, they'd sharp buy the other brands cards, as i can't see them getting shot of their PC's if it was their brand that went :D

Power connectors for the 5 series are on the side not the end so that should help a bit with the fitting into smaller cases.

About time they followed Nvidia in doing that, why they didn't do it sooner god only knows.

Also i thought they were clocking the X2 higher at stock and giving them a little extra in terms of something to make it a better option then two singles giving the X2 an advantage although if they are only oc'ing the X2 to what a single can do not much point.

I'm building a long awaited upgrade PC ready for my pre ordered Win7. Will I buy the 58xx series or wait for Nvidia's new cards? depends on the price of the 58xx on launch. Basically I don't have a PCIe graphics card at the moment, so if the 5850 aint daft money at launch then I'll lift one. If it's too much, I think I will get a 4850 or something similar as a stop gap then just wait and see what happens when the nvidia cards come out. What ever the performance of either companies cards, once they both have DX11 compliant parts in the market place the prices will get adjusted to place them relative to the performance of the competition's parts. Then will be the time to get in on Dx11 parts, who knows, there may even be a few games by then coded for dx11.

You may want to wait for nVidia's cards to see what they have to offer, but we don't even know when that will be. I suppose the advantage would be ATi lowering prices. No harm in waiting if there's o desperation.

I don't see much point in upgrading from a current 48** card, or say a GTX260 or above (or similar there abouts).

But sheesh.

Look at MY card.

Wait so you are buying another GTX 295 and you think that will be good enough for DX11 titles while the 5870's wouldn't??

No, I already have a water-cooled GTX295 and if the price drops it would be easier for me to buy another one. I always buy the water-cooled BFG cards (as far as I know no-one sells a pre-watercooled ATI card) so any discount that I can get on that will be gratefully received.

I'm not really shopping on price (£570 for a GTX295 isn't ever going to be about value;)) - I want a solid product that will do the job. I basically buy BFG rather than NVidia as they have REALLY looked after me in the past with RMA returns. When I have to buy something other than BFG I have tended to buy XFX ATI 4870 cards as they allow you to transfer the warranty.

The DX11 thing is obviously unrelated as the GTX295 can't do DX11 as far as I know. When a game comes out that needs DX11, I'll buy the best BFG H2OC card available that does DX11.

I also use my systems for Folding at Home and at the moment, NVidia are much better than ATI for folding. When that changes I'll buy something else.

Hopefully that clarifies my position.

That wouldn't be unrealistic, I'm expecting circa £200, they have to drop it.

There is no way they'll drop the price to £200. It wouldn't leave them any room for the cards in the gaps.

They'll be £275 and there will be smaller drops for everything else to keep the pricing heirarchy in place.

Meh I guess, oh well. I'll just settle for a 5870 then, tough times.

Rumour is they may have to slow them down.

Yes, but they're slowing them down because they can't cool them, not because they want to sell you something slower to hype market share later.

If these TDPs are to be believed they are cooling more than two i920's on a dual-slot card. That's going to run hotter than a very hot thing.

Well if the X2 comes out with lower performance then two singles really can't see the point in that though xfire it is :). that said X2 release is in november so maybe they will come up with a better cooling solution can but hope.

Course, if the rumours on the nasty yields and problems for the GT300 are to be believed, those who say "I'm gonna wait" may be waiting for longer than than they thought.
