ps3 on watchdog next week!

But i thought the ps3's failure rate is less than half a percent of its userbase. Where as the xbox was over 50% if not more. In fact i don't know one person who has owned an xbox 360 and not had to send it back at least once, including myself ...3 times.

According to that letter they have said less than 0.5% have YLOD according to their Database. 2.5 million times, say 0.4% is about 10,000 YLOD. That's quite a lot of machines in the UK, and also there can be other faults apart from YLOD (Mine had a broken Blu-Ray drive).

less than 0.5% is still quite good for a piece of consumer electronics though i would have thought

It doesn't say much about the confidence in your product though does it, if you do end up with a faulty machine and then have to splash out £120 to get it fixed.

If you own neither consoles and saw that article on the BBC (say an uninformed parent) you would probably buy the Xbox instead, especially backed up by a better warranty.

Normally, a faulty product would become apparent within 12 months.

It is low but don't forget that is just for that 1 fault, there are other faults as well. With the other faults together I bet it is multiple times that figure.

Watchdog will be calling them up on the failure rate for sure but i'm also sure they'll approach it in a completely unprofessional manner and completely remove any credibility there could have been to their claims. They're just circus clowns as far as i'm concerned.

Wow what an intelligent and insightful prediction, and totally accurate to boot! Who is that clever cloggs that... oh wait.

Oh and look who they've got in. A self confessed 360 fanboy.

Iain Lee isnt a fanboy hes just a freelance employee of Microsoft, would have thought his journalist intentions to be totally honorable. :D

Can i complain to the BBC and Watchdog that Watchdog isnt fit for purpose and a waste of my money?

Anyone else feel like complaining to the bbc after watching this?
My ps3 was replaced outside of warranty for free, next day service aswell.
Hope they get told to issue a retraction, like they have done in the past.

You are looking at it from your point of view where 10,000 is loads. To Sony as a company id imagine it's a tiny figure compared to consoles sold.

It's all business and id wager it makes no business sense at all to Sony to offer 3 years warranty just because Microsoft are, when the failure rate of their product is well within the guidelines of their business plan.

I have already filled in their complaint form.

First time I have ever done one before but I couldn't not after watching that.
I'm still shocked at how bad the whole report was if you can even call it that.

I feel for the people who have had to pay for repairs etc but wow that watchdog report was terrible whichever way you look at it.

Microsoft had no choice but to offer extended warranty, failure rates were so high for 360 that it was the only thing they could do short of pulling them out of circulation and getting back to the drawing boards.

I think the bbc are in trouble here. but remember guys if sony do sue the bbc, its the licence fee payers who will foot the bill

With any luck the government will tell the BBC to fund their own court fees and abolish the TV license tax, I'm dreaming though.

I love the fact that if this was based on the 360 all you guys would be saying "MS are at fault the BBC have it spot on" but because it is your beloved PS3 anyone who says anything negative about it should be hung, drawn and quartered.

Before anyone moans, yes I have a PS3 and no I am not a 360 fanboy

Whilst the aired program showed a misunderstanding of the problem and was somewhat a witch hunt Sony need a kick up the ass if they are indeed charging people for repairing inherent faults.

If the product is inherently faulty they should be replacing it - its a consumer right under the sale of goods act. Its glaringly obvious they are making excuses for the reason peoples consoles are failing outside the standard 1 year warranty in order to get out of their liability under the law. The moment they admit there are design faults they open the door to having to repair/replace the consoles and they know full well that is the case.

Touch wood my ps3 hasn't done this to date but its worrying to think that Sony aren't willing to acknowledge what seems to be a growing and common problem.

Ultimately though it doesn't matter if its 1 or 1 million people - if the problem is down to a manufacturing defect its their responsibility to sort it out.

Sounds like a good idea. Would be quite interesting to get Watchdog to investigate themselves... all though they'd still just lie about everything and make up half the story themselves.

Who cares if you have a PS3, what you just said is missing the point completely, have you even read whats been said in this thread? and did you watch the report?

wrong, it states, the yellow light of death is a representative for multiple faults refering to the 0.5%, it dosent state hdd failure in that passage,so that could increase the percentage however overall I think it will be little to negligible

The yellow indicator is simply a non-specific fault indicator that can be triggered in a range of different circumstances. For example, it could indicate a problem caused or exacerbated by the console’s power supply, by overheating, by poor ventilation, by software issues or by any one of a range of issues that may inevitably affect any complex item of consumer electronics.

Just watched it on iplayer and thought that it was a poor report. Starting with the self confessed xbox guy, who was just curious to see what was the problem, yea right. They asked the guy who was fixing the machine if they all had the same problem. He said yes but we never find out what that problem was. In the end i didn't know wether it was the failure of the ps3, the 1 warranty or having to pay to fix it after the year that was the issue. It just didn't feel like a proper watch dog report

Did they have the right to use the sony logo on their van?:D
