First 5870 pricing in the wild - 320 euro

The problem is, that if correct, the sources would place the 5850 in the 200-230 range. However, the recent price drops by OCuk have put the GTX285 in that price range too. Although the 5870 will have no competition, the 5850 may have a run for it's money if it's performance is close to that of a GTX285, as it's projected price is actually more than the aforementioned 285. Cat fight!

Depends on the performance. We've had wildly different performance estimates so far.

Since AMD do know the performance, I think the HD5850 will be slightly better than the GTX 285 (Assuming HD5850 is given a $299 MSRP).

edit: US gtx 285 prices still seem to be ~$349 and that one Asus batch seems to be the only gtx 285 at sub £200 ex VAT on ocuk.

Given that the 5870 allegedly spanks the 285 it's not unreasonable to guess that the 5850 will be on par. Going on the only leaked EU price for the 5870 and applying the same ratio that has been seen on US leaked prices for the 5850 it may come in around £210.

Given the above unless Nvidia drop the GTX285 further then it sounds like a no brainer, you'd go with the 5850 as it has DX11.

Looking bad for team red with that price. I will be sticking with the 275 for my new windows 7 build next month.

please explain why it is bad?

the 275 on launch was on average £232 http://www.*****.net/content/item.php?item=17900

so paying an extra £40 or £50 for something which will be far far better isn't bad at all.

fanboyism isn't a good thing when it's clear Nvidia are well beaten on this one.
Whilst they sort out there problems with the 300 series ATI are already working on there 6000 series cards.

ATI 1 v 0 Nvidia me thinks

also look at the opening day prices for the 295 aswell. http://www.*****.net/content/item.php?item=16808
ranging from £390 to £450

Dont forget that the 5870 is actually only a tad better than the 295 in some of the benchmarks, it seems to exceed in the games that ATI already do well in but i still see the ones that didn't run really fast before only get a small boost again.. what is that related to? shaders or something?

295 = dual card remember, comparing them is ultimately pointless.

Not only is the 5870 still cheaper, it's also a single card, making is better than the 295 by default as it avoids all that dual GPU malarky.

Also upgrading to a 5870 most people will not require a new psu. (subject to reports upto now being correct)

The Nvidia 300 cards will be bulky and expensive, if ATI get there pricing right they could force Nvidia to make a loss on the 300's untill they get good yields and can drop manufacturing costs.

More lightly that ATI will milk the cards for a good prifit till the 300s come out tho :p

Hmmm i've currently got a 4850, and according to rumour,hearsay/forum ramblings...

5850 3 times the current price of a 4850 but less than twice as powerful....

Bang for buck computation = does not compute.

Definately will wait until next spring/summer when ATI will bring out its first refresh and prices tumble on the 5850.

Plus there might actually be a DX11 game that will need that sort of card.....Battlefield 3 hopefully.

Not sure where your getting your info but all points we have seen so far lead to it being as powerful as the GTX285, which is quite a bit more than twice as powerful.

Not sure where your getting your info

You are both getting your information from speculation & rumour and debating as if it were fact. That being the case, you are both being slightly childlike and impatient in my opinion. Why can't you just wait and see (less than a week so don't panic) what the actual specs are and then perhaps your ramblings will be more informed/less inane.

I was stating that every "benchmark" (although probably unreliable) we have seen in THIS thread states what I said, I was asking where he was getting his info.

At no point have I been "impatient", I have said many times that the info we have may be utterly rubbish for all we know but seeing as all we have is speculation, that is what we do, speculate.

If you don't want to do that, leave this thread alone and wait for the 23rd, instead of acting like a pompus self important "middle man" between people having a simple discussion.
