A brave shop worker was fighting for his life last night after he was shot while chasing raiders from his store.
Colin Thomas, 24, ran after the five thugs after they smashed a jewellery case with hammers.
As they fled one of the masked gang - who grabbed just ten pieces of cheap jewellery - shot him at point-blank range with a sawn-off shotgun.
"Phenomenal" supervisor Colin had just been promoted at cash 'n carry store Costco.
Manager Martin Sandler said: "The staff are all distressed. It was fairly busy when it happened. He was a role model."
Det Supt Bob Cummings said the gang probably planned the raid carefully. They fled in a getaway vehicle on Thursday night in Croydon, South London.
But he added: "If you're going to do a jewellery robbery, Costco is not the first choice of target."

Am completely shocked by this. I work for the company that provide the demonstrations within Costco but I wasn't in the office Thursday and Friday so only just heard about it.
As said on another story, they had no reason to shoot him, they were getting away and he was running after them. Really hope he pulls through.
My mum has said she wonders if they will re-think having jewellery in the stores in future.
(Apologies if this is a re-post, i tried searching and couldn't find anything)
