A brave shop worker was fighting for his life last night after he was shot while chasing raiders from his store.

Colin Thomas, 24, ran after the five thugs after they smashed a jewellery case with hammers.

As they fled one of the masked gang - who grabbed just ten pieces of cheap jewellery - shot him at point-blank range with a sawn-off shotgun.

"Phenomenal" supervisor Colin had just been promoted at cash 'n carry store Costco.

Manager Martin Sandler said: "The staff are all distressed. It was fairly busy when it happened. He was a role model."

Det Supt Bob Cummings said the gang probably planned the raid carefully. They fled in a getaway vehicle on Thursday night in Croydon, South London.

But he added: "If you're going to do a jewellery robbery, Costco is not the first choice of target."

Am completely shocked by this. I work for the company that provide the demonstrations within Costco but I wasn't in the office Thursday and Friday so only just heard about it.

As said on another story, they had no reason to shoot him, they were getting away and he was running after them. Really hope he pulls through.

My mum has said she wonders if they will re-think having jewellery in the stores in future.

(Apologies if this is a re-post, i tried searching and couldn't find anything)

jeez, the only solace I can take from this is that it's not exactly a common occurance, but it only takes one incident like this to spark others into seeing how "easy" it is.

I only hope the ****s involved die painfully and horribly :/

I see Croydon continues to earn its lacklustre reputation...that said I'm not sure it was a wise idea running after 5 men alone and completely unarmed. Wouldn't fancy my chances in that situation.

I don't know if they shot him inside or whether one was outside with the shotgun but what i don't understand is how they'd be able to get in the store with a gun without someone seeing it? unless they had it under a long coat maybe.

They normally have two people on the door checking everyone's membership cards and counting how many people come in.

A brave but guy, It's good to see people who won't stand by and watch stuff like this happen. I hope he pulls through, and the scum who did it get what they deserve.

However, I can't help think he should've done the smart thing and just let them go then call the police. I personally wouldn't risk my life for any job anymore. Especially for one that must be paying him about 15-16k.

I guess adrenalin took over. In my case adrenalin freezes me to the spot. Poor guy.

Awful to hear.

On paper he shouldn't be alive after a pint blank shot from a sawn off. They inflict horrific injury.

I have every faith in the Flying Squad to nail the cowards to the wall.

I once chased a guy from our store, alarms went off and he refused to stop then started running, he got away sadly, but when I got back to the store, I got shouted at by management couldn't understand it at the time, but now, considering I was 17 at the time, I can see how badly it could've ended

This is why I wouldn't chase anyone. Our store isn't that bad for theft, well it is but it tends to be empty packets that are found. My brother worked in the shawfield store which is a lot worse for junkies and the like. Why chase after them for something that costs the company not a lot and for £5.75 an hour? They have nothing to lose.

I 100% agree with you, however I can also understand how a sense of right & wrong makes a person act like this guy did. It's a damn shame - fingers crossed for him

in certain situations, yes but working for someone else never.
lets say he was unable to walk after, you really think the company would care of him for the rest of his life?
