My printer (attached to a Windows 98SE computer ) finally came to a halt and had to be thoroughly cleaned; currently the cartrige carriage will not move to the centre of the machine when the printer lid is lifted ( so changing cartriges will be a problem ); I have tried the 'normal' of switching off the power but have yet to try to stop it during a print-run ; I wondered if anyone on here has any ideas as to what I might try ?

I have been looking for HP service centres but no luck as yet on Google :p

Dude, with all due respect, the 840c is ancient. It would cost you as much to repair as it would for a new AIO HP F380 or similar.

HP doesn't even retain old drivers in their site so do you really think they'll do anything to that old printer?

Unless it's some standard switch you could find yourself don't expect even find spare parts.

Lift the lid. Look at the back edge, near centre of the lifted lid for a little plastic nipple. The switch is in the corresponding hole in the body of the printer.
