How much of your monthly wage goes on rent.

Rent?

*Shudders*

When I was renting, it took up about 30% of mine and my wife's take home (3 1/2 years ago).

Now we're homeowners and pay about 15% of our take home on our mortgage.

When I first moved out I was working at Woolies on 5.something an hour. Roughly took home about 600 to 700 a month and my rent was £290 a month on a 1 bed town centre flat. So that was about 45% of my takehome.

I was living with my other half and she covered the bills I did the rent.

Now the mortgage is less than 10% lol, until rates go up again anyway...

When I rented it was anything from 100%+ (when a student) down to 15% (highest salary I earned while living at my dad's house).

50% just on rent sounds pretty crazy, but as I pointed out the last time I saw a thread like this, the amount a person is earning has a huge affect on the impact of this.

-Someone taking home £5000 a month spending 50% on rent is left with £2500 for other bills
-Someone taking home £500 a month spending 50% on rent is left with £250 for other bills

I know that's an extreme example but it does happen, a friend of mine living in Kensington spends nearly 50% of her income on rent yet she is still left with nearly my takehome pay before I've paid anything!

Great thread, I was about to start a thread like this to help me gauge what was an average percentage of mortgage/rent out of your disposable income.

Our little family is looking to move house, the houses we have been looking at are really tempting at but I was baulking at the mortgage repayments which would be more than double they are now (but we are paying 1.5% at the minute, I have to remember that).

It seems the average is about 30% and the houses we were looking at would bring us to about 23% so not as bad as I thought.

Puts things into perspective a bit, maybe I was just being a tight **** :o
