Will consoles kill the PC gaming scene?

And I wonder what the age of the market is for PC's, compared to that of consoles.

Single 25-35 year old's living in their own place tend to have lots of dosh to spare, and I would say that they're more likely to blow it all on TV's, surround sound setups + consoles and their games.

It's not as good, fair enough, but I don't think the difference isn't that much that people really care. You can pick out bad points, like COD4 dropping when the host disconnects cos he's in a huff, but for the most part - and with newer games taking this account - it's good enough.

If a PC could sit in your front room, linked up to your 1080p plasma, and some sort of plank with your keyboard and mouse elegantly strapped to it, then I'm sure PC's would have a better share of the games market.

The whole spectacle of fat TV's and home theatre setups give an extra edge to consoles.

lol tell that to the mobs of Fear 2 PC gamers who wanted Dev blood for no dedicated servers. Most, including myself, just played through SP and then put it away in a drawer never to be played again purely because lack of dedicated servers.

I'm a bit older than that but even the PC is in the front room with the consoles & TV.

Very little interest in console gaming here. We have an X-Box 360 and PS3 which the missus uses occasionally for brain training or puzzle type games. I haven't played on them for months. By contrast I have a laptop which gets used pretty much every day for "sandbox" development for various train sims and the desktop upstairs which depending on my work shifts probably gets 2+ hours a day of gaming. I've currently got Fallout 3 running and in the queue Crysis Warhead and a baseball management sim from the USA. Even if no more PC games were released from this day forward, I've probably got enough in my collection to keep me going until old age/death means I can game no longer!

I actually sold my PS3 for a high end pc. PC games look miles better than consoles and sound is better. I should have kept my ps3 for 2 games fifa and gran turismo 5. i well pes it is.

"Good enough" is not good enough though, not when you are used to a higher standard.

And I do have a pc connected up-to my tv, although I don't use it for gaming, that's just a media machine. I need to sit at a proper desk for gaming.

I tried to play some Unreal Tournament on my PS3 last night, but I just couldn't get on with it, it looks crap, very low res ...I think it's actually been up-scaled, certainly not rendered at a high res. And the control system is just awful, the controller is ok for button bashing fighting games but for actually pulling of precision headshots and delicately navigating it's hopeless.

But there is no reason at all you can’t have a pc hooked up to your tv, you can even add a games controller to it if you really want to. It just requires a tad more thought and effort to do it and get it set-up than a console.

Personally I much prefer my pc not to be at the centre of the house, the last thing I want while I am gaming is other people around me, moving around, switching lights on and off or talking to me. I like it to be in it's own room, where I can be alone, away from distractions and annoyances. That's just a personal choice thing though, you can put it where you like.

I loved Homeworld....was such an epic game. I'm going to buy it again.

For me, this is an example of why PC gaming will not die at the hands of the consoles.

I feel PC Exclusives or games developed with the PC as the lead are MUCH "Deeper" than any console lead titles.

Also, as a PC gamer, like most of us here, I am used to friends/workmates/some in the industry slating the platform. For that purpose, I now feel as though it is INVINCIBLE as it should have died years ago according to them yet still strides forward.

I really want some of these big name developers to bugger off to consoleland indefinately and take their unimaginitive unoriginal toss titles that are constantly churned out with them. Please go away and stop porting it all to PC. Its a bad influence.

PC gaming will never die. I'm not going to go over all the valid points that have already been raised.

I don't know about you guys though but with the way PC games are marketed now (very small shelf space in stores) I think I've got every game I've bought in the last few years from online retailers and download services like Steam.

I can't think of a single PC game I got in-store. It's sad.

Pirates will kill the PC.

God I hate thieves. Trying their darndest to destroy the thing I love ..

Valve and their Steam service? Torrents are popular because they are free and easy to use. I never pirate games because multiplayer is all I usually play, but digital distribution needs to reflect the cost savings made over retail.

No as PCs are a lot more versatile, saying that consoles are catching up

but for a first person i would favour PC with keyboard and mouse any day same for simulations

Yeah what is with that. Digital distrubution is more expensive most of the time and surely the overheads are far smaller?

Consoles can do servers too. I've been playing BF1943 on the 360 and although it's only 12v12 the system works very well and I enjoy it a lot.

I personally can't stand online shooters where there is a host.

Apparently the 360 version of Section 8 comes with a tool called xserver which allows players to setup a dedicated server for 32 players.

I've been playing PC shooters since 1998 and always looked down at playing them with a gamepad until recently. When you think about it aiming with a mouse is too easy and not very realistic. With a controller it takes more skill to aim but is very satisfying to kill a target at range. I like the feeling of pulling a trigger on a gamepad too, pressing a mouse button just isn't the same.
