Will consoles kill the PC gaming scene?

You can just buy a 360 controller to play sports games on the pc and a fight stick for fighting games.

I understand what you're saying but Joe Public just wants to buy something that works straight out of the box rather than having to buy a separate controller and sort out the drivers for it, get a bluetooth dongle etc.

Obviously most of us have controllers but this is a forum for people who (in the main) know what they're doing!

Those controllers are plug & play, you plug them in & they sort themselves out just like on the consoles.

I'm trying to get more into PC gaming, because in terms of graphics, and modding games I think it's a lot better. But I'm just nowhere near as good with a mouse as I am with a pad. Playing COD4 on PC and getting dominated is no fun when I'm used to holding my own on the PS3 :(

lol. Nothing needs to be done to get the 360 controller(wired) to work apart from plugging it in.

Probably because the console versions have assisted aim.

that would be the auto aim doing the work for you!

I have it turned off where possible, very annoying when your lining something up and someone runs across your sight and the auto aim trys to go for that guy.

It's the whole control method in general, playing on a pad for years I'm not used to the increased speed / sensivitiy of the mouse, along with using the left hand for all other functions. I think for FPS it's a better system, but unfortunately one that I'm not very good at at the moment! lol
Still only been playing PC games a couple of months, hopefully I will improve.

They already have sent pc gaming in to a coma. But that's more to do with there's more money to be made from console games and how easy it is for joe bloggs to get and run a pirate copy of a pc game.
When people ask me which pc games do you recommend I am really strugglng to think of a genuinely great recent ish game after I say company of heroes.
The best pc games are like 2-3 years old but we will always have the first person shooters I guess.

True as it gets. FPS and RTS will always appear on the PC albeit in a console-ly watered down kinda way... Hope the next consoles have plenty of grunt upon release and a similar architecture to modern GPUs.

PC's have so many negatives:

- Expensive
- Fiddly - Software / Drivers / Hardware / Incompatibilities
- Location in your room - most likely an office or bedroom
- People use them all day

Consoles with their online capabilities are now doing what PC's used to do best. Playing real people online is a huge addition to the last generation of consoles, with the 360 doing it properly for the first time.

I think really though that the location of the PC hinders it most. If there were some way of having a centralised PC with wireless video linking it to your TV, then it would greatly help. Having a PC in your lounge defeats half the point of having a PC, you wouldn't want to do work there, and having it in your bedroom means it's a less relaxed affair when it comes to gaming.

They are more expensive in terms of hardware, but the games are a lot cheaper. It probably is more expensive to game on PC's though, unless you buy a massive amount of games.

Fiddly, the only recent game that has given me issues is bioshock with sound. :p

Ultimately though which platform is best is up to you, I happen to like both about even for games. Overall though I prefer PC because I do more with it.

I'd love to play an FPS on a console and be able to use kb and mouse.

Screams of 'hack' would be heard for miles.

One day. One day.

PC > console.

Still, being able to jump on a dedicated server of your choosing is vastly better than being stuck in a lobby and connected to other players on the strength of a single person's connection (i.e., peer-to-peer online gaming is complete toss).

No, they won't kill it but since consoles went on-line, things ain't what they used to be.

Pirating isn't helping either but that's another one for the search function. ;)

+1

Games on PC that depend on lobbies and hosts just don't cut it anymore. The number 1 reason why fear 2 online play flopped was because no server files. People gave up on it within several days and even after several months asking for server files, there still aren't any. The lag and hassle of having a single host just isn't up to par with todays standards. Why on earth would anyone want to go from hosted servers (PC) to lobbies and hosts (console)???

It's not as good, fair enough, but I don't think the difference isn't that much that people really care. You can pick out bad points, like COD4 dropping when the host disconnects cos he's in a huff, but for the most part - and with newer games taking this account - it's good enough.

If a PC could sit in your front room, linked up to your 1080p plasma, and some sort of plank with your keyboard and mouse elegantly strapped to it, then I'm sure PC's would have a better share of the games market.

The whole spectacle of fat TV's and home theatre setups give an extra edge to consoles.
