£4k~ loan to buy a 3 Series

That green one is very pretty. A work colleague has a met blue E36 which I think is a 323 with M sport kit - factory rather than suck on (he's not into cars). It does however have lemon leather seats. Its done about 170K and looks very good for it.

Would an E36 328 be a reasonable buy then? Coupes look nice but I need 4 doors.

para had a 325 with the bodykit and put in a 328 engine. 328 saloons seem pretty rare

No, I had a 325i with a 325i engine in it :p

How was it?

Incredibly fun to throw around, moreso than the E46 because of how much more connected to the wheels you feel in the E36, its just slightly more raw and involving.

Also, there doesn't seem a huge difference in price between 328s and M3s. Is there a big difference between the two?

There is a massive difference in performance, as well as the expected increase in servicing/maintaining costs. However I'd opt for the M3 every time.

I never swapped the engine in mine, I thought it had HGF at one point, but it was deemed fit by the garage. It just needed some of the cooling components replacing (some=all).

I did however swap the engine in my mates E36 318ti, we dropped in an M50B25TU (Single VANOS 2.5, from an e34 525i). Engine swaps in the E36 are simples.

What are the running costs like on an E36? Typical prices of consumable parts would be great. :)

Is the 328 a 2.8 not a 3.0? So it'd top out at 30mpg max?

If you can get tidy examples for about £2-2.5k i'd seriously consider one as a daily runner.
