When parked up do you leave your car in gear?

If people aren't taught to do it that way, why does that make them retarded? I wasn't taught to do it, nor do I drive a tractor, so I don't do it.

Reduce the stress on the starter motor? So it doesn't have to spin the addition bit of the clutch, gearbox and what not?

And 1st or reverse is the best gear, otherwise whats the point of bump starting in 2nd?

And I always leave it in gear and always depress the clutch when starting.

On hills its wheels to the curb and in the opposite gear (on the basis of an engine turning backwards isn't as easy as forwards :p)

Its safety, its a bit like treating a gun. Always treat it like its loaded

The same can be said for the clutch IMO, if its left in gear and you start it without disengaging the clutch then you are v.likely to crash into something or kill someone.

Always leave it in either 1st or reverse depending which way im parked..
not really an issue because i always depress the clutch when starting up.. doesn't everyone

Yes, unless leaving it for a few days and its not on a slope. Then will just leave it in gear, no handbrake.

What car's that? Seems a bit wacky :p Surely you can then readjust the gear stick as you like once the key's out though?

A Saab, the ignition key is on the transmission tunnel. It's a bit like having a free multi-lock. Took a bit of while getting used to it, but I think it's a good idea, can't see why other manufacturers don't do the same.

Most don't realise it but Saab have lead the way for innovation for a long time. Turbo chargers. roll cages, safety features etc were in their cars before a lote of others.

1st or reverse, depending on which gear I'm going to need to pull away when I come back to the car (or which direction the slope is that I'm parked on). Driving a Fiat Seicento I'm pretty knowledgeable on the subject of parking brake failure!

Always 1st or reverse depending on incline. I thought this was common practice, maybe I'm old but I've been doing it since I was 15 and learned to drive.

I always leave the car in gear, I have to on my driveway! And 1st or reverse are the correct gears to use, you need the highest gear ratio to provide the greatest resistance to movement.

Pushing the clutch in when starting makes next to no difference in terms of load on the starter IME. The drag caused by turning the input shaft of the gearbox is minuscule in comparison to the force required to tun the engine against compression, and is likely to be cancelled out by the extra load on the crank thrust bearing anyway. Perhaps if we lived in the Arctic it may be different.
