BMW, Jag or Merc?

Driven the XF 3.0 DS and over the current A6, Merc E and 530/535d would take it by miles. Its a superb car. Just couldn't justify the cost this change so went for the 335d instead.

I'll wait and see on the new 5 next year, hopefully I'll be able to see past the door pillar on that...but it will have to be pretty special over the Jag. The Merc interior is to me felt very cheap and nasty, especially around the centre console and arm rest.

I can't imagine any of the cars mentioned being anything but very good. Probably more a question of personal preference than anything else.
If I had a wad of dosh to blow and didn't care about depreciation, I think that it would have to be the Jag. Guess it's just one of those cars that I feel I really should own at least once in my life and haven't done it yet.
The BM and Merc might be more "sporty", but frankly who cares nowadays. Jags are notorious for having a lovely ride.
Just, yes please!

On the quality of the diesel engine alone I would go for the Beemer.

They seem to be a work of art.

As for Jags, I am quite tempted to get a 2l diesel X Type. A 53 plate one can be bought for about 6k.

I used to hate Jags as well. I guess age is creeping upon me.

Have you even driven one with the new 3.0 Diesel engine in it?? Its easily on par with the x35d or x30d engines in the BMW if not better.

I have driven none so couldn't comment on dynamics etc, but on looks alone it would have to be the Jag XF in sport guise, I think they look fantastic and from the pictures the interior looks incredible too.

Definitely the Jag for me, even if the new BMW isn't available and the E-Class is very new

There's just something about the new XF which I really like and the new BMW would have to be truly special to beat it IMO. Don't like the new E-Class at all really

I haven't mate. I have had a spin in a 2.0l X Type and I quite liked it although I would imagine the 3.0 to go some.

We use 3.0 diesel Beemers at work as class 1 response vehicles and they are incredible machines in my opinion although I am no expert in cars. Considering BMW haven't been in the diesel business that long, they have it mastered it seems.

Who makes the engine for the Jag btw ? Is it Jag or do they source it out ?

I'm sure you will put me straight Fox but haven't BMW only had diesel engines in their cars since the 1990s or so ?

Or, as your what seemed double edged, are there reliability issues that are endemic in them ?

I am quite happy to be stood corrected by the oracle. :)

The 524TD was BMW's first diesel way back in 1983 - and at the time it was the worlds fastest diesel passenger car. Which, at the time, was a bit like being top of the class at special school, but this is BMW's third decade of diesel production :)

Ah, I see.

You learn something everyday. I thought it was later than that. :)

I remember the old box shape 3 series and they all seemed to be petrol.

Thanks for that. while on the subject, I have warmed to Beemers a lot in the last 18 months or so. I never liked them previously aside from the M3 and 5 which I may sell my mother for.
