Who sleeps at work?

There there, no need to get in a tizzy little fit.

I'm not tired doing my hours, some days I do 8, some I do more, some I do less. I expect my managers and staff to get their job done - I have a duty of care for them of course, but it's not my problem if they're not sleeping at home or whatever - if they are not fit for work then I see to it that I am aware of it and take necessary action.
I just find the vehemence in your first post odd, and that you come down against a power nap because it's unprofessional.

And yet post on an internet forum regularly throughout the day.

I sleep at work all the time. I didn't get much kip last night so I'll probably grab a couple of hours at work this afternoon. On night shifts I get between 3-5 hours of sleep :D

i work nights half the time, when I first started I maybe fell asleep once or twice.

Could possibly get away with it too if I wanted but best not.

I used to take a 10-15min nap in my car during lunch break. Don't anymore, I'm only ever tired at work if I have been out/up late the night before, which is my own fault anyway :p

Indeed - self inflicted tiredness is not the work's problem, it's your own. :)

Who dares wins ;) Besides, I check in from time to time (usually when an RTM pings in) - though I don't have to justify myself to you. :) If I were abusing the internet connection I'd get pulled up on it. I get my work done, and am achieving significant results, so I reward myself with some time on the 'net. I reward my staff through bonus schemes or flexibility for time off, leaving early, or holiday times etc...

As I mentioned if I feel a member of staff is flagging and is doing no good, I'll send them home (although they won't get paid a full day's pay) and hope that they come back in bright eyed bushy tailed - more often than not they do, and I can count on 1 hand the number of times this happens.

People wouldn't understand a powernap, they'd go for a sleep, and how can one enforce a powernap? I let them go out for a smoke (then again my boss smokes so it's hard to ban it altogether :() have breaks for making tea etc... some of the guys do a mini-handover among themselves so that they can go and put their feet up for lunch for 10 mins or so - which is great.

If I could enforce a powernap I'd be happy to let them do it, but let's be frank here, withouth delving into the murky road of the HSE/Human rights and such, I'd have no right to interfere with someone who's asleep, they may have a medical condition, etc... if I have people taking powernaps all over the place, how do I know that it's not the same people doing it every 5 mins, and how do I know that they are only going to sleep for 15 mins? I know I have the discipline to do it, but short of employing someone to monitor everyone's "powernaps" it would be ridiculous. So rather than doing that, if anybody falls asleep, apart from getting a ribbing from everyone else, I have a chat with them - and I make my call based on the person.

I'm not as hitlerish as I come across, I'm a firm but fair, and more often than not very understanding and patient - I just can't deal with mickey takers. To avoid mickey taking, we ensure that the opportunity for such activities is not there. Please tell me you understand my reasoning. :)

Yep I sleep all the time on nights. I'm allocated my work and If we are all finished I sleep. Sometimes play on a console, sometimes play cards but if all our work is done and I'm not sent home there is nothing to do but sleep or sit in a chair with your eyes open.

May as well sleep. I sleep better knowing I'm being paid for it.

Of course I do :).

I was just, as I said, finding your original post a little odd.

i used to have a job where i would work 2 weeks out of 3 doing nights, so would have fri-sat-sun off, so would get in at 8:30, check and reply to my emails, watch a movie and be asleep by 11:30, wake up at 7am when the first of the monring guys would come in :D and used to get double time for that, managers was call with us sleeping as long as we woke up if a call come in. god i miss those times.

I sometimes use the office as a doss house after a night out, does that count?

There have been occasions when I've nodded off on my early shift, getting up at 3:30 is rather killer.

I've done that and set the alarm to wake up before everybody else arrives. You look dead keen then. ;)

I usually fall asleep for an hr or so in the office...we have a nice big leather sofa that i tend to lie down on...good thing work is slow at the moment so can usually have my power nap.

Overbaring bosses like freefaller is the reason why i studied like hell at uni and got a post grad degree so i have the pick of the sweet jobs. And i do. If i went to an interview and they told me i wouldn't get a proper lunch hour i would laugh in there face and walked out. (and i have walked out of interviews before when i saw the boss was a prat as well)

Also during the summer i tend to go out to the local park and have a nice nap in the park. If anyone thinks they could have a problem with that they will have problems with a employment tribunal

in my last job, I was in the server room and everyone left the office.

couldn't get hold of anyone for the alarm code, so just had to sleep in the server room :(

luckily I was able to turn the aircon off, and in the morning my boss gave me a free day off and gave me doubletime for the night's hours :D

Hey! I'm not overbearing I just expect people to work and not take the mickey. People are well paid and have enough breaks to make up for the long horus and work. In different departments they can afford to take an hour long lunch breaks, most of the people here are happy just to get on with it. Sometimes they go home early, sometimes they stay late, and if the fan propels faeces in all directions we'll get some food in, take a break and then hit the problems hard.

I expect commitment and hard work - I'm not against breaks, I just know that the people here would take the mick if we offered them "sleep time". Besides they've all signed the 48hr week exclusion mandate so what do you expect - to give 'em their cake and eat it?!

You sound like a good person to work for, only if my workplace was a little more strict there would be a huge increase in productivity.
As for the OT no i dont sleep at work, i would never dream of it if i felt i needed to sleep at work i would go see the doctor. Im 24 so i should be able to stay awake. I only do 8 hr shifts but i go gym three times a week depending on my shift that could be before or after my shift and i still dont feel the need to sleep.
If a french person doesnt need sleep in work im sure the rest of us dont, some come on england.

PS sorry freefaller i had to get my dig in somewhere.

They put a medical bed in my office. Nuff said.

Also have fallen asleep during lectures a few times... Can't help it if the rooms warm and I've only had a few hours sleep the night before. Sometimes I have terrible sleep cycles.
