Hitachi. Any good or still Deathstars?

I've had a 1TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B or the last few months, its running away quite happily with no problems, also had a 250GB Deskstar which I bought 4 years ago and have just sold it on to somebody else, still working perfectly...

there have been a few post asking a similar question

people still seem scared by the deathstar incident even though it happened a long time ago, I have had 2 1Tb hitachi drives for about 10 months now and are absolutly fine. i'm sure some people have had bad experiences with them but no more so than any other manufacturer.

Seems like these drives have improved since hitachi took over.
I do have to admit that i dont hear much about these drives. This could be due to:

a) not many people buying them
b) not failing as often as the compertition

I have to admit i see a lot of people complaing about seagates, samsungs, maxtors and some WDs going wrong but i havent come across any hitachi's yet.

I was scared to buy a Deathstar at first, just due to the rumours, but mine has proved faster (if a little warmer) than my Samsung F1s. I really like it; not a bad hard drive at all.

There were never any hitachi deathstars AFAIK, they were the IBM Deathstars.

Anyway they make some of the fastest and cheapest drives today, and plenty reliable.

I've got a IBM GXP120 and 2 'other' newer Hitachi None have died :)

The Deathstar was the GXP 30 & 60 I got through 6 30s and 3 60s all under warranty

from the drives I've seen, the biggest failure rate is segate/maxtors

but everyone on here will have their own story about mass failures for samgsuns/westerndigital etc..

the best option is to buy double the space you need, and keep a backup copy of your data.

Every brand has had a generation of drives that had their share of problems, aren't the gxp 60's around a decade ago by now? or not far off. Seagate, Maxtor, samsung to a lesser degree have all had issues FAR more recently than Hitachi.

Still got 120gxp's working, IBM ones, i think there were 180gxp's aswell which were great, and there have been about4-5 generations of drives under the Hitachi banner that have been pretty much flawless(I don't remember any problems with any, but every drive has some fail, though don't think i've seen a "my hitachi has died" thread on here for years).

If I want raid(non ssd) I'd still probably go Hitachi because IBM/early hitachi's always had great great performance in raid. Seagate always sucked in raid, maxtor/WD somewhere inbetween.

google themselves did a MASSIVE experiment saying not one brand is more reliable than another.

and online retailers confirm the same results from their returns figures.

if a certain brand was worse than another brand, online stores would simply stop stocking them, as they don't want to deal with returns etc. happy customer = happy shop owner :)

I've only ever owned 1 IBM 60GXP and it died. Mind you that was in my 1st custom made pc back in 1196 or something like that.

Other than that ive had a Samsung fail. Had maxtors, seagate and WD and non have failed.

Think i need to give Hitachi a go.

Any idea how hot these run compared to the others?
Its either 2Tb or the 2Tb Seagate LP

I've got 3 Hitachi's (post-deathstars) and they have been quick and reliable so far (touch wood!)

No probs with them at all although they are aroubd 5-10 degrees hotter than the Sammy F1's (could be to do with the sensor placement)

The only drive I've had fail was in my first PC - a Seagate

I've got Maxtors, Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung and hitachi's all fine. (touch wood!)

People get far too sensitive when they have something die, even more so with HDD's. I don't buy Hitachi because their price/performance/acoustics just aren't there so there are better alternatives.

I had one 1TB hitachi when it first came out, i had it for about 10 months, never had any problem.

I was too thinking of buying the 2TB, only the five platter worries me, the more moving parts, the more heat and mechanical wearing...
