Stargate - Universe

I thought this series premier was really good. The characters seem quite believable and the set designs and CGI looks great.
I was quite worried that this was going to be another Atlantis, having the same formular as the original stargate, but much worse actors, and the set designs and makeup on some episodes really looked cheap.

I hope the bar is kept as high as it is from the looks of this pilot, and i hope they don't fall into the same formular of exploring earth type civilisations every week, because at the end of the day, whats the point?

Finger crossed! The series looks good, especially with a top notch actor like Robert Carlisle carrying the show.

i wouldn't think it would be to far fetched to have some planets with humanesque archetypes, we are after all the most 'advanced' species on earth, there's no reason to assume that similar beings to us wouldn't have evolved on other planes given similar parameters

They will just go with that, oh look even in different galaxy's it turns out human's basic design is where most species are at some point. Ancients, humans, asgard, all the same at one point.

Or they'll say, yeah the auto gate builder, dropped of some genetic material on planets that had no advanced species to see if they could make it, cue humans at various levels of developement.

As for enemies, there will be some, though they might really just move to a new planet every week, new system and no one following them. I assumed that at some point not to far into the series the ship would run into trouble and have to crash land, or become a space station around a planet somewhere. At some point, not having any relationships, or goals, help people out or do something, will get dull, I can't see how with no real choice over where they go or when they have to get back they can create any relationships, friends, allies, enemies, which when you think about it, was about 98% of the plots behind sg-1 and atlantis.

Set wise, I thought it was bland, cast wise, I wasn't impressed either, all the same boring stereotypes as I said before.

I also said it was predictable, almost everything that happened was easily seen about 10 minutes before it happened, nothing original or interesting happening.

3-4 half decent jokes was about it, shockingly bad gaming stuff as in all tv shows. Has no one who writes tv/creates cgi stuff for games within tv shows, ever played one in their life?

Deffo going to give it some time, unlike SG-1 which obviously had the film to set up the premise and the team, the action and half the people, this had to do a lot of the establishing crap so it was really a rather dull episode after the first 30 mins.

Anyway the most important thing to talk about was obviously Jack, when did he turn into a porker?

That's what i thought, i was looking at it thinking, that's Jack right? that can't be jack, i was sat there waiting for them to say his name to confirm it was him :o thought i was just meant to be some random guy

So mad with myself, think that SG1 and Atlantis are bland sci-fi at best, so set out to hate this one, actually quite surprised. It was a touch predictable, obvious character types littered throughout, but with a complete sci-fi drought at the moment, i'll give this a go, bet they mess it up before the end of the season though ;)

EDIT: Before the Stargate Defence League pounces, I have watched both SG1 and Atlantis in their entirity, didnt just watch a few episodes and give up...watched those out of sci-fi boredom as well. :(

I hated Atlantis (thought it was just dire) and lost interest in the later series' of SG1. 10 seasons was just too much, I think I stopped watching regularly after season 4.

Just watched Universe, I agree with what an earlier poster said, the series will be much better served with ongoing story arc's instead of just one story totally done and dusted in one episode. Thus enabling character development and maintaining viewers interest to tune in.

The acting was "ok", sc-fi drama's always struggle for top notch actors, the fat nerdy kid was way to sterotypical and so was the black "bad" boy, theLover boy Lt and the grunt who steals the food. Hopefully Robert Carlyle's character keeps a degree of depth, but I predict it won't.

Anyway I will keeping watching and hopefully we will get a worthwhile show.

I like how dark it is at the moment, it doesn't seem as lighthearted as SG1 and Atlantis (taking a leaf out of the BSG book).

Characters haven't grown on me yet however it's only 2 episodes in so it's to be expected. They don't gel well at the moment as a handful of them have never met/met for the first time just before the episode so I will hope that they bond more as we get into it.

A good start considering how shockingly amateur the first episode of SG-1 was! :p

You watched over 235 hours of TV (not including adverts) because you were bored?? You must have been!

When you put it like that it seems a lot, but a few hours a week here and there over the last 8 years, it's not that much. I guess i invested so much time with the hope it would get better, it didn't, it got worse, more mediocre and more predictable, it's textbook sci-fi for the masses. Got to a point i'd watched so much I wanted to follow it through to the end, sure there are plenty of people who watch a series through to the end without thinking it's the best thing in the world.

I should also say I crave decent sci-fi, but when it gets to the point nothing else is about to fill that void, i'll watch the sub-standard stuff as well.

I'm not entirely put off, and at the same time, not entirely enthused. I am thinking it needs a few episodes to settle before I can pass judgement fairly

What a great start to the show, i really enjoyed it and think it could turn out to be the best series yet if they manage to keep up that sort of quality, the preview of next weeks episode in that half hour special looked quite entertaining from what i could see, can't wait! :D

really enjoyed it but i'm easily pleased with sci-fi :) thought general jack looks good for a 60? year old, remember mcgyver was mid eighties

...and chubby!

I liked most of it, definitely worth keeping tabs on.

I found it a bit stupid that a soldier at the rank of captain looked at all the galaxies and said "so all those dots are stars?" just to explain it to the viewers who haven't taken GSCE Science.

I think it should be alright, it isn't as pretentious as BSG but not as cheesy as Atlantis/SWG. seems to be somewhere in the middle.

When I watch some of SG1/SGA I am like "stfu with the crap jokes, they ain't funny and if this was real you would be pooing your pants"

But then when I watch BSG sometimes it gets too emo and I feel like fast forwarding some of the crying/talking scences.

So hopefully this will be somewhere inbetween.

Quite liked it so far, but a bit too early to know for certain. I think it is one of those shows you need to get in to the characters and setting, they went an entire new direction with how they woven what happened in the past with current events though.

So far I am quite liking it.

I quite liked it, it should hopefully offer something a bit new. Was slightly annoying watching it with me housemate who had never watched any SG trying to explain things that were going on.

Spoilers for people that didn't catch last night!

One thing that got me was when their base was attacked forcing them through the gate. Were those ships goa'uld as I thought they were pretty much wiped out!? Could be good for another SG1 movie! :P

The Go'auld weren't wiped out as a species their galactic dominance was just destroyed due to the vast majority of the system lords being defeated by the end of SG1. Chances are the ships are from the Lucien Alliance though.

Overall i thought the premiere was excellent and it certainly reminded me of the classic episode 'The Fifth Race' from SG1, especially when they were viewing the star map showing how many galaxies the Destiny had visited.

The visuals look like they've been upped considerably from SG1/Atlantis days, the Hammond looked much nicer than its counterpart ships in the previous shows.

Looking forward to Air Part 3 :).
