The major flaw for me was the young cast. The entire group of soldiers look to be under 25 years old, some with attitude problems.
As for the fat stereotypical "nerd" kid... he's totally out of place. The first two episodes where full of poorly done dramatic scenes and tried to be completely serious (which failed because you didn't know the characters enough to give a ****,) so having him pull stupid faces into the flying camera was just totally distracting and out of place, almost as if he walked into the wrong studio while filming. I have no doubt the series will "lighten up" and he'll be at the heart of many things, but he was totally ridiculous in the opening episodes.
Thought Robert Carlyle did his best with the script he had, and the colonel might be the only redeeming factor in my continued viewing, unfortunately however it looks like he was quickly made a supporting actor and so we're stuck with the baby faced little lieutenant to go and preach good will to any aliens they meet.
