I've no doubt this has come up before but I can't seem to find any thread discussing it:

My WD3000BLFS just arrived - 300 Gb raptor in laymans terms - and despite ordering the 3.5" it is the 2.5" that was sent. Even more thrilling is that the seller doesn't have any 3.5" in stock and I can't source any in Denmark where I now live.

So, resolved to this I started hunting for a solution e.g. the icePAK WD designed specifically for this. I can find one on Amazon Japan, no where else...

I looked into the Icy Dock but they specifically advise against using their model with raptor drives. Can someone please help me source a dock that will let me mount this thing? This is going to ruin my weekend if not :(

Yeah, the VelociRaptor is definitely a few mm thicker than a standard 2.5'' drive. Besides, the IcePak is there to act as a heatsink. I don't know how well the drive would do without one.

If you ordered the HLFS and got sent the BLFS, I'd send it back for an exchange/refund - they are different products.

I have the WD1500HLFS. Its a 2.5" drive inside a 3.5" enclosure.

Is your a 2.5" drive (no enclosure)

I read somewhere that they cant actually be used in laptops anyway, so i dont really see the point in making them 2.5"

I ordered the BLFS but the sales note said it came with the icepack. It arrived standalone with only the dustcover. I've contacted the vendor to try and sort out getting the icepack sent to me but I don't know how much joy I'll get with that so I'm looking at alternative options.

I can't seem to find the icepack for sale anywhere. It looks like it isn't sold standalone. I've also emailed Western Digital to ask if I can purchase it direct but no reply as yet.

Any ideas?

The icepack is only there to aid cooling of the drive. If you have sufficient cooling around the hdd location, you will be fine.

And yes, the Drive is 12mm high, so is not intended for laptops due to power requirements and cooling. Most laptops cannot house this drive.

I know it's there for cooling (not that that's really needed) but it also provides a way to mount it in a 3.5" bay. I'm looking for a way of mounting it as opposed to mounting it half assed or laying it on top of something.
