8800GTX vs 5870 3Dmark06 scores

Hi,

Just replaced my old card with a 5870 last night. The 8800GTX scored about 13500 in 3Dmark and the 5870 scored about 16500. Is this latter score far too low? It seems it to me, I thought the new card would have blown the old one away...

I'm running XP with the beta 5870 driver but I'd still think the score should me much higher than that.

Hmmm...
i get 18867 3DMarks with a 5850

I just hate the way Vista feels and does stuff. Even copying files takes an age. I work in a busy IT department for a massive global company and everyone here hates it too. Of course it's only my opinion, but if Vista was so good why on Earth is M$ bringing out 7 so soon? I don't personally know anyone into gaming and PC's in general that prefers Vista over XP. But that's just me.

If you work in a busy IT department, then I would suggest that you knew the release cycles of Operating systems. Microsoft used to release every two to three years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Microsoft_Windows). It has only been XP that has enjoyed such longeivity. Also, you may like to tout XP, however, there was exactly the same backlash and same "purported" issues on that releas, I should now, I beta tested back to Windows 98.

I will say about vista it has being proven that you need 6gb of ram to run games as fast as xp with 4gb so there is certainly an overhead penalty in running vista. However I love W7

There's an overhead penalty simply for using x64 registers, which would account for much of the performance loss. W7 does a better job of compensating for this than Vista does.

I totally agree. For the company I work for to shift to Vista would be a massive issue, mainly for our users, which are over 2000 just in my location. The questions we are asked about how to do simple things in XP you wouldn't believe. It's hard to teach people with little or no formal education how to use a lot of our systems, if we had to re-teach them... doesn't bare thinking about!

I remember sticking with 98 as long as I could, until I was forced to switch to XP. I remember everyone slating XP just like I do Vista.

same here

5850 @ stock speeds

18350 points
sm2.0 - 7075
sm3.0 - 8934
cpu - 4992

at OP - worth checking whether your motherboard is allowing your 5870 to run the pci-e lane x8 or x16. I know some peoples boards have defaulted to x8 which lowered their scores in 3dmarks and had to force x16 to get better scores.

I get 25k on 3d mark 06, but i have an i7 920 @ 4ghz. As you can see a powerful cpu makes a hell of a difference on your 3d mark score.

And also vista is perfectly fine but 4gb is a must for vista to be honest.

I am sure that Vista will run better with 4GB, but that in itself is crazy talk. I mean, for me the OS I am running should be just ticking over transparently in the background while my apps run. Nowadays the OS dictates the hardware of a PC and that's just wrong in my opinion.

My board is definitely set to run at x16 by the way, maybe it's just the cpu bottlenecking the score. If I switched to a Q6600 would I notice a huge difference? I'm thinking of selling my old bits to a mate at work but don't really want to go the whole hog of a new i7 mobo and cpu.

If it where me i would sell the stuff to your mate at work and buy your self an i5 setup. It would be a big upgrade from your current setup. As for the ram, well 4gb is pretty common nowadays and its also cheap aswell.

The q6600 would improve your3dmark06 scores massively but in games hardly at all.

Your bits are fine. Drop another 2gb ram in there and they will be flying for some time to come.

Vista is fine? Are you for real? I installed it and used it for a few weeks, then came to the conclusion it was pure style over substance. Everything ran slower, drivers were few and far between and nothing was where it should be!

I tried 7 briefly but it looked and felt the same as Vista for me. Yes one day I'll have to bite the bullet (especially with DX11) but for now I'm sticking with XP.

Windows 7 is the bussiness.

Remember Windows98 and then you had Windows Millenium and followed by XP.

Windows Millenium was a stop gap... A piece of junk thrown in to make some money between 98 & xp. Well Vista is Millenium 2.

I used Vista and Xp on my development machines and XP was better for gaming but I needed Vista for testing and well I detested it.

I now run windows 7 and believe me its the new Windows XP but better.

loved xp, hated vista made my games run slow, i now run win 7 and its great only problem is i cant find a driver for my old r300 printer.

Well that's put the cat amongst the pigeons, I don't know what to do now. So going on my current spec, what should I replace my cpu, mobo and ram with, that would drastically improve my set up? Should I move this into another thread?!

2gig or ram plus windows 7 64 bit. Job done.

Your cpu runnign at 3.55Ghz is fine.

Even if you went to an expensive i7 rig running at 4Ghz you might see a few fps gain in games but that would be it unless you xfire your 5780 in which case your cpu would hold you back.

I'm just the opposite. Was using Vista, and now for quite some time W7. I could never go back to XP it just seems far too dated for my liking, I have not used XP in years. Plus if you have up to date hardware why let that down with an outdated OS?
