Operation Flashpoint 2-Dragon Rising.

ummmm, yea. It is ******. online anyway.

single player can be played, but they have not made it easy on you. Your squad seem to love to ignore you entirely.

I reckon, if you want a decent squad based tactical FPS, you still cannot beat the BiA series (the first two anyway). If ya want something with more depth then buy ArmA2.

I don't know, maybe they will fix OF2-DR, but there seems to be so much to fix, I don't know - can they do it?

is that just the autoplay? if so i get that from a few other games on 7x64

tried browsing the dvd and running the installer directly? works for me on those that yell otherwise.

Yeah tried exploring the disc and using the exe file but still the same message. What i have done now is downloaded an image file and run the install from that and it works perfect, Only thing i can assume is my disc may be faulty ? I,m going to take it back later today and swap it for another copy and see if that works. Seems weird that out of the six new games i bought its only this one that does it.

For those who have got to this stage, what the heck am I supposed to do now?. I've been sat up on that hillside overlooking the area below for about 20 mins now and nothing has happened??!!! :-

Observe and follow up along the mountain ridge, I don't know if you had to but I kept my binoculars on him, after a while I ended up running into him at the bunker, not sure if I was meant to... but got the order to kill at the same time.

Online was great for me first time, now though the interface is laggy and slow, in game I've had some bugs, last match was one of the death matches bullets stopped working half way through, everyone was running around knifing everyone else.

hmm lots of negativity about it, think i'll not be buying this afterall

im getting the same feeling but tbh i dont care i have the best sim and thats arma 1 and arma 2.

in the xbox srction they are saying its good maybe because they have never played arma1 and 2?.

I wish I actually got mine yet.

As if things arent bad enough already. Royal Mail will serve to destroy whats left of the cheap preorders this fall due to lack of delivery

Yep, graphics not great. I'm running pretty much maxxed out at a lowish res which is my LCD monitors native of 1440x900 :-

2zjkv1w.jpg

For me, it just feels wrong, the whole scale of that image looks completely wrong, the guys nearest you are hardly "gears of war" type models up close, but the ones behind them, look the wrong size, still very close in the grand scheme of things yet they look overly shrunk and the quality/detail of them, well thats why I'm calling them sprites, they only look marginally taller than the sandbags and they look tiny compared to the humvee. Then you go further back and the shacks are incredibly poor quality at that distance, slightly further and the trucks coming down the road are embarassingly low def and crap looking.

The difference between the two humvee's that are pretty close together, is awful. The drop off in detail at any distance is abysmal, when its not great to start with. Graphically its an joke, its like back to the era when HDR first got used. Because it used a lot of power most games used it sparingly if at all, but you got the odd completely turd looking game with massive overuse of HDR and sacrificed everywhere else in terms of quality, to do so. Methinks a couple of people who made those games, were involved here.

It really is funny, the only time the engine looks even close to good, even taking into account the scale of the maps(come on, look at Crysis for gods sake), is at night or looking into an overly bright lighting effect that makes everything else a silhouette. When not being overpowered by a distinct lack, of overuse of light, it looks terrible.

Which would be forgivable with good AI, realistic guns, decent car mechanics, not running for 15 minutes doing nothing, or really anything good. :(

Really, if you haven't bought this yet, don't bother.

Graphics - Not the most important thing but can detract from the whole experience. Low res textures, weird smoke that doesn't move while the screen does. Distant hills looks like something out of Morowind which was great at the time, but belongs in 2002. Night time it seems a tad better, but not great. Where it looks good is your immediate area. Anything a bit further away just looks crap.

Gameplay - Not bad, but not good. Kept me interested for two hours up to the 4th mission (much of that time spent trying to get used to the retarded squad command menu which is clearly designed for consoles). By then it haven't changed at all. Run 805m ahead, kill the enemies that attack you 221m out, kill the last batch of enemies that attack you 115m out, get to target, blow it up, rinse and repeat. It might change later on (probably not), but I'm too bored with it to get there. I should enjoy this game, not work at enjoying it.

Enemies - A joke really. If you're good at shooting games, you need 6 bullets to kill 5 enemies. Rarely does more than 4 -5 come at you . The AI is semi-smart from what I've seen and tend to fall down and hide/crawl in grass when you shoot at them, or hide behind trees, but they are lit up in your scope and picking them off is easy, not matter what they do.

Your squad - I find them irritating to command as they're so stupid at times. Then again, I prefer going at it on my own so I could be biased. I completely ignored them and played as if they are not there. The enemies are so easy to kill that I didn't want their help as it makes the game easier than it already is. I've gone to the 4th mission and didn't die once or even came close. Too easy.

It's not all bad, people that love the whole squad based thing would probably like this game. If you can look past the easy bad guys, the repetitive gameplay, crap graphics and (mostly) stupid AI, you could probably find some good to focus on.

I'll probably go online with this and hope it's better. Gotta have something out of it for the money I paid.

I was so excited to play this when it was first announced. The more gameplay videos I've watched and after reading peoples reactions has left me very underwhelmed

Trying to think of a game on the PC that I'm looking forward to and I'm struggling a bit. The new AVP game could be good along with Left 4 Dead 2 but other than that my minds blank

they look tiny compared to the humvee

most people would look tiny against a humvee, they are massive. 6 feet tall and 7 wide

Im more concerned the gameplay is pants, it could be wireframe 3d for all I care so long as it played smooth :p

Well had a go for a couple of hours and not that impressed :( I'll start with what I like:

1. At night with the IR scope on a sniper rifle hitting people is satisfying the way they die. If they could make Arma 2 better this way it would be great! In Arma 2 people get shot, sit there, then die a second or two later and just fall down.

2. The animation and reloading animations are a LOT better than Arma 2. Reloading a missile for example and general gun models.

3. Did I mention its satisfying shooting people at night with a sniper scope?!

Now what I don't like:

1. Helicopter sounds. The helicopter normally gets almost right above me before I can hear it and it just sounds weak. In Arma 2 you can here the digi-digi noise of the rotars in the distance and when they pass over you it sounds awsome!

2. The sounds. The explosions sound muffled and not too impressive. In Arma 2 when you fire at the distance the resulting BOOM a few seconds later sounds amazing.

3. The enemy AI! Enemies are so dumb :( I've only been playing the campaign in hardcore mode and they seem to only work in groups of 4 or so. If there are loads about only a few will engage whilst the rest are running around. Once those people are dead and you shoot the others they seem to realise something is going on and come in for the attack.

4. The friendly AI! One example, on the second mission I ambushed the convoy and stole a jeep to drive us to the first checkpoint. We were ambushed by a load of people so I stopped the jeep behind the hill, jumped out to order my troops to disembark and they IMMEDIATELY jumped in the drivers seat when I jumped out and drove off down the hill towards the enemy and died. WHY did they get in the drivers seat?!

5. Fixed view forward in vehicles. Shocking. You can't see whats to the left or right of you so I end up turning and hitting rocks or bouncing around when I hit a tree. Even in BF2 you could look around the vehicle to look left and right at junctions. You also have no idea if your teammates are in the vehicle yet when in Hardcore mode. They don't say they're aboard or anything so I just get out and look at the vehicle as you cant look around the inside. Same when in the back of a helicopter. You can look a bit to the left and a bit to the right, but not much movement at all so you can't watch the baren countryside flying past.

6. In hardcore mode it should still tell you the current weapon you are using and what firing mode you are in. Hide the amount of ammo fair enough, but in real life you can look down and remember if you have the grenade launcher selected or are in semi/auto mode. With no indication what mode you are currently in its frustrating.

7. Moving whilst selecting a weapon! Why do you stop moving and cant even look left and right whilst the weapon selection box is up when you roll the mouse? I'm assuming this must be a bug of sorts?

8. Checkpoints. In the second mission on hardcore I've destroyed the first missile launcher which takes about 15mins, but it doesnt have a checkpoint save? Then you take a couple of bullets and die on the way to the next checkpoint and have to start from the VERY beginning of the mission again? Are there no saves at all in hardcore mode or something? I prefer playing in hardcore so why not allow me to have checkpoints + max realism the game offers? It's unrealistic to go 30mins between checkpoints in a game where one bullet can kill you and your friendly AI are so stupid that I basically leave them in "follow me" mode.

9. Atmospheric sounds. As mentioned before there arent really any. You hear your people saying "Enemy helicopter 200m north" but you can't really hear it as it's so faint. It then comes over and you can hear it but it sounds awful :(

10. No visible damage on vehicles at all so they all look pristine.

11. Flight model of helicopters is shocking and they feel far too light.

So in conclusion - Shooting stuff at night is satisfying using the heat scope, but everything else is sub-par really. I've given up on the campaign and I'm going to just make a sniper mission at night time! How PC Zone gave this 90% I'll never know :S

It's not a totally shocking game - The mission editor seems comprehensive so should be fun messing about in vehicles, making battles, etc using that, but the main game itself is quite poor. There are aspects of the game here that I prefer to Arma 2 (such as night heat scopes, reloading animations, the gun models, etc) but I prefer Arma 2s overall game mechanics. Arma 2 is far from perfect however and that game has its fair share of bugs too.

If you could combine the two you'd have a great game, but seperately neither are top notch, but I'd go with Arma 2 because the map is a LOT more detailed and the sheer array of weapons on show there is great. Multiplayer is also a lot more hectic in Arma 2 given the huge maps and numerous players on them. if only they could sort out the gun models, poor performance and graphics glitches in Arma 2 it would be awsome. I've stopped a few times in Arma 2 and thought "Wow that looks amazing" whilst looking at scenary, but I haven't done that in Ofp2 but to be fair to it the game runs very well on max detail and the buildings look better!
