Has anyone used this RAM

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-083-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1387

on a AM3 790FX system.

I'm looking for some RAM which will run at 1600 at CL7, but I understand that most RAM is designed and tested with Intel systems in mind.

I have some Patriot G Series AMD on order but that is out of stock and I'm not sure when it will come in.

So if anyone has used the Geil in an AM3 system I'd be interested in hearing how you got on with it.

Cheers,

Nigel

I ordered this ram for my AM3 Phenom 2 955 system.

I didn't test it yet (parts shipped today). I wasn't aware that it was tested only on P55 motherboards :( I hope it still works for me :( It should though, since memory voltage is compatible...and if it's DDR3, it should work well.

I don't know about the Geil, it doesn't say - just commenting that most RAM states that it has been designed or tested with Intel in mind.

Nigel

Thanks for that...its a little more reassuring now.
This particular ram set IS a DDR3 set (so in all fairness it should comply to the DDR3 specification). And the 1.65v working voltage seems to be normal even on AM3 motherboards.

We'll see when the parts arrive...fingers crossed

All the DDR3 RAM sold does.

Unfortunately, the DDR3 specification covers RAM up to 1333MZ at 9-9-9-24

Most of the RAM being sold is overclocked beyond the DDR3 specification.

Many put the configuration parameters in XMP which is an extension to the standard SPD table. Not all, or indeed many, boards can read XMP so they default to whatever is in the SPD which is quite often 9-9-9-24 at 1333.

Some RAM is sold with enhanced configuration in the SPD but not all and unfortunately SPDs aren't usually disclosed by the manufacturer so it's hard to know what you will get until it arrives.

This means to acheive the advertised speed you will have to manually configure your BIOS and voltages.

Thanks Nigel :)

Yes of course, I'll be modifying my bios settings to measure up. The motherboard I'm getting should be OK at 1600 and 1800 on overclocked settings. The GEIL set goes above that, but I didn't buy the pack for just that, but rather, to make sure it will be comfortable running at 1600/1800 settings.

Thanks for the info though. I always wondered what the difference in XMP was :)

The problem I had with some different memory that I have since returned was that just setting the main parameters 7-7-7-24-2T @ 1600 @ 1.65V wasn't enough.

It wouldn't run and I was left not knowing whether it was my MoBo, the RAM or the host of other parameters beyond the famous main ones.

That's why I created this thread - to find out whether this RAM runs easily at 1600 CL7 on an AM3 board.

Cheers,

Nigel

Didn't realise that an i7 would run on an AM3 790FX motherboard.

Excellent if it can because that offer me an alternative upgrade route.

Nigel

wooops sorry didnt notice that :P
lol

anyway my parcel seems to be in DHL's hands and is currently in Birmingham, UK!
As soon as it comes to my house (in 1-2 days) I will let you know how that ram performs on the AM3 system. Hopefully I'll be able to update you from the new PC itself :P

Many thanks.

May be too late though as the offer ends tomorrow. I have some Patriot stuff on order but it's out of stock - just wondering whether to wait it out or swap.

I doubt the parts will be at me tomorrow. They're currently still in the Midlands, UK :)

Can't really tell you what to do, except that I THINK they'll be just fine for your needs (and mine!)

They're at a great price...and I've read nothing but positive reviews about them...

I'm sure they would be okay - just that I had to send some GSkill back that didn't work as advertised - and when I sort technical help I was just told that it was designed for Intel not AMD.

Cheers,

Nigel

'Compatible with Intel Core i5 CPU on P55 Chipset' - thats taken from Newegg who are selling these in the USA.

The Americans are getting charged £135 equivelant & they dont pay 15% so their a bargain in terms of comparative price here.

I hope they work for you anyway.
