2 x M225 64 GB Raid-0 SLOW

I benchmarked using a 64kb and 128kb stripe size with 2xM225 256gb on ICH9R. I think I posted the results in the main Crucial M225 thread.

The writes were largely the same, the reads were better with a 128kb stripe. I did want to try a 4kb stripe and a 256kb stripe to get a broader spectrum of results, but isn't an option with my controller.

This is another problem. People base their stripe size upon benchmark results.

Real-world use (assuming general + gaming) gets better results from a small stripe size (i.e. 32kB or smaller).

Well not a problem for me because, as well as the benchmark apps, I did try some core apps and games - but very subjective timings which I wouldn't post because accuracy is questionable. I settled on 128kb, but as said I would have liked to have tried different stripe sizes.

A number of years ago I did tests with different stripe sizes, 16KB, 32kb, 64kb & 128KB and I found that 32KB was the best for all round general use, ie running an OS on, so that is what I have used ever since and although some have said that a bigger stripe size (256KB, or 128KB in the case of the ICHxR) gives better performance (with SSDs), I think I'll probably stick with a 32KB stripe size when I install W7...

This has got me thinking...32kb stripe on an older version of Windows might have been appropriate, but is that still the case? Have the average file sizes in Windows 7 increased, particularly those that are most frequently read/written?

If the trend is larger files with a new OS, then it may be appropriate to consider whether the stripe size should increase as well. Thoughts?

I've a week off soon, and may get round to doing these tests again with the new firmware and drivers.

The thought did cross my mind to try out a few stripe sizes with W7 installs (using SSDs), but as 32KB gave me good results with Vista, I reckoned on just going with 32KB again, but will certainly be most interested in your findings...

It will be early November when I can do it - if there's enough interest.

Would be good too if anyone wanted to list apps or games to time. If I have them, then I can probably include them as part of the comparison.

These were my findings too.

In fact, checking my results, 8kB and 4kB were slightly faster.

Quick question - how is this playing with TRIM? I was under the impression drives on a raid setup couldn't deal with TRIM commands?
