Why not download and install windows 7 and then activate it with your key when your windows arrives?

That's what I did.

Not sure why people are thinking it's so much hassle to clone and install? It shouldn't take too long, alignment of the SSD might be out, but you won't notice the small difference it will make to the SSD performance.

My 512gb SSD array is restored in about 45-60mins across the network.

When I was playing with stripe sizes I reinstalled Windows 7 six times in one night to try different things :D

I say go for it :D

I use WHS to create a backup to the server, then boot from CD and restore across the network.

But a more common approach would be to use something like Acronis True Image, clone the HD to the SSD, then change your boot order in the BIOS to boot from the SSD. It will be more complex if your HD or C:\ partition is bigger and the used size is greater than the SSD capacity.

If that's the case, then I'd be more tempted to wait, if you're planning a Win 7 upgrade soon, as that means re-sizing partitions and moving data around to make HD partition <= SSD capacity.

How about doing it this way:

- Create a backup image of C:/ using Acronis or Paragon software. Save that to another HDD.
- Then install SSD and do a fresh install of windows onto it (minimal install).
- Then install Acronis or Paragon and restore using the image that was saved on the other HDD.

Would this work and allow one to clone a HDD?

It would work, but if you restore the full image you're just going to overwrite your clean install of Win7 so it's going to take you longer, and not put you in any better position?

I was going to do that for using an SSD in my WinXp system. So in affect, making an image first and then restoring it on to the newly installed SSD.

We've got 19 of the 128GB left. These will be gone by tomorrow.

We will also have 256GB arriving tomorrow that will leave us with 20 spare after shipping the pre-orders.
