*** Crucial M225 SSD's Available From £102.99 inc VAT ***

Well my luck finally ran out with firmware 1711. Played a game of TF2 earlier, went back to the desktop after I was finished, opened "Computer" and whenever I double-clicked on a partition I would get a "Windows Explorer has stopped responding" error immediately. Looking at Task Manager most of the processes were owned by random gobbledegook characters.

Hit Shutdown, PC bluescreened. Next time it booted the C: partition was just gone, "Unallocated Space" according to the Windows 7 DVD installer. Tried to Repair it several times but it got nowhere.

I've since managed to reinstall W7 and fortunately it seems my other partitions on the same SSD are intact, but I've lost everything that was on C: (saved games, etc). So, currently copying 180GB of data off the SSD onto my regular HDDs.... :(

What firmware should I be using now? I have to do a downgrade to go to a new firmware because 1711 is buggy, which necessitates a complete low-level format of the drive. 1916 is the latest on the Crucial website I think....

You certainly want 1916, because that supports TRIM and is up-to-date.

BTW - Nice tease on the desktop CraigN - care to share the whole thing?! ;)

EDIT: You know the funny thing is I think I just found it!!!!!!!

Anyway..... :p

picking up a 2nd hand 64gb M225 tomorrow.

Going to do a fresh install off windows on it, been told it has the latest firmware.

Should I run the sanitary erase tool first before installing Windows ? And what's this about the wiper tool ? Do I need to run that as well ?

Thanks

I can't see if there's any reason to do any of that if you're putting a fresh install on it. Just format the disc before you start an you're good to go. Win 7 recognises SSDs and sets the offset and partitions up just fine.

Sadly, one of my M225's has just had to go back to Crucial after crapping out several times... Good news though is because it's EOL, I get a C300 in return

I tried to update my 1571 256 M225 today, I burned the iso onto a cd, started up, and the freedos environment loaded when I pressed enter.

Then I got an error message saying that the cd drive could not be found. I had set my drives to IDE in the BIOS.

Does anyone know what's going on with this? I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.

My DVD drives are showing as PATA in the startup procedure, but the freedos environment does load so I'm at a bit of a loss.

I could not get the thing to work on Win7 - had to use an XP pc and worked fine - suspect DOS and Win 7 just don't like each other?

I know these are differant drives and the 2010 models use SATA 3.0 and have faster read times (but in some cases slower wrtie times) but the one thing that holds SSD's back is the cost per Gb and as of Septmebr 2010 it still costs the same kind of money for the same capacities.

Yeah, it's unfortunate.

I really want a ~250Gb SSD to store all my apps and games, but the price per Gb is still just unreasonable. In the end I went for a 60Gb vertex 2e just for the OS.

I'm hopeful that the soon-to-be-released intel G3 drives will bring about a real improvement in the price per Gb stakes. If we see prices pushing towards £1.00 to £1.25 per Gb, I will consider it worth going for a large drive :)
