330d advice & tips thread

I liken the bass reproduction from BMW head units to that of listening to someone elses headphones 3 seats away on the train, awful.

I get bored quickly, i like to try and experiance new things !

Unless you are planning on getting a weekend toy, I dont see what you are trying to achieve with this new 'experience'.

If you are doing more miles, look for another way to keep your car as moving from what you have to a 330d (even a remapped one) will not be the soft of 'experience' that you will enjoy imo.

Is the 330i not more economical than your STi? that might be a better choice.

Get about 32mpg from mine on a run and 26mpg as an average, bare inmind it is an auto though.

The audio in the E46 and E39 was so gash you actually wanted to rip your ears off just so you could hold them out the window to hear the engine.

Perhaps that's why BMW did it, for what is / was essentially an Alpine based system, it is shocking.

Thankfully, E90 and E60 3 and 5s are a LOT better, even in standard guise you get subs built in (in the 5) although it is still not audiophile quality but you can pay for it with the Hi Fi, logic 7, etc systems.

However, the audio in an E46 is just not justification enough to not buy an otherwise excellent example. The HK kit is gash. Having ripped one apart it is a piddly amplifier unit which also hacks the signal EQ making it appear louder by only increasing the frequencies to the mid high and low ends.

Again, no justification to turn down an otherwise mint E46

The stock audio in the E90 is just as rubbish though I had a 320i M Sport Auto for a few days years ago and that had a cracking stereo. The 320i ES though which I had for 6 weeks had a stereo as bad as my E39.

It never ceases to amaze me how BMW can, on the one hand, make some of the best cars on the road yet on the other fit them with the worst audio systems known to man.

The Z4 hifi DSP option I have is pretty good I must say, the best standard system I've heard.

Disclaimer: I'm not a massive audoiophile, if it has enough bass and volume I'm happy

The HK system is ok, I'm happy with it.

The first owner who paid £750 for it must have been furious though :p

I suppose it depends what you are used to, what some think is awful, others may find perfectly acceptable. I for one, love music/home theatre and find poor quality sound reproduction annoying.

Whats that, a car with a smiley face?

Not really....just saying I hope he enjoys his new car :) and saying 'beamer' is far easier than saying bee em double you :p

I went in a 320d on a 53 plate (no idea what E number that is :p ) and the stereo wasn't toooooo bad, I've heard worse and better.

The stereo in my Mum's Citroen C3 for some reason kicks ass for some reason; if they can do it why can't BMW?!
