Games for Windows Live, what a retarded ******** bunch of ****.

I reinstalled Windows earlier. Before I did it, I backed up my Batman save folder, so I'd be able to resume from where I had go to (second last level).

Just reinstalled Steam, started the game. Waiting for GFWL to fanny about loading updates, entered the CD key for the game (again), entered my account details (twice), and went to the savegames screen.

No savegames.

None.

Check save files are in folder.

Still nothing.

It seems that GFWL, and Microsoft in their infinite and total wisdom have decided that users need protection from their own savegames, and unless you back up the entire GFWL folder and the AA savegames, you won't be able to restore anything.

So I ask you - what possible use does this **** backwards load of **** have? If it actively hides your save files and doesn't link them to your profile and store them elsewhere, what the **** use is it?

Thanks Microsoft, now I have to start the game again. Morons.

Calling something you don't like "gay" is beyond tedious.

I always backup my Documents, and the AppData folder that is hidden. Usually saves most headaches with games. Quite a few games keep their save files hidden in AppData.

I managed to restore my batman save files fine last night. No problems at all.

Yup, tedium seems to be a running theme tonight. All I wanna do is kick some villains in the face, but cos of a pointless piece of MS bloatware I can't. Why do they insist on trying to fix problems that don't exist?

Yeah, I'm not sure whether it is the GFWL folder, maybe it's the AppData folder as you say. Can't seem to find a conclusive answer. Either way it's stupid.

Why did MS create the My Games folder, which seems to be exclusively for the storage of savegames, if they're not going to use it? We seriously need some standardization here because it's proper ******** me off, and I can't be only person that has lost important saves in a similar fashion.

So why would you assume that was the way to do it in the first place, surely you would double check if those saved games were so important to you?

Well, name me another game that stores save data in two different places, one of which is hidden? Yeah I should have checked first, but seriously, wtf Microsoft. There's just no need for them to make things so **** backwards. What on earth is wrong with just sticking the save files in one, easily accessible place? It's almost as if they want people to have this problem.

I love GFWL never had a problem with it best thing to come from Microsoft in a long time.:)

Fair enough, but what benefits does GFWL have? The nearest equivalent service is Steam, which does useful things like allow you to purchase games, automatically updates the games, allows you to join friends - all of it in an easy way. GFWL does half of this half as well - there's just no need for it whatsoever. It's intrusive and badly put together.

Lol the save games are in Eidos folder in My Docs. Is this the folder you backed up. If not then too bad if u did then just go to the backup grab the folder Batman which has all the files u need including save game folder (probs need others too) and put them in mydocs/eidos/batman. Should pick up.

Make sure ur signed into live tho (not sure but for fo3 u do) and it makes save games loadable.

Backed up my Batman saves and did an OS reinstall myself. Im not too bothered that they might not work tbh, I'd nearly finished it but I'll happily replay to get back to where I was. Love the game and aside from gamer points (pointless as they are) I really struggle to see the point of GFWL.

Those are the files that I backed up and the files that I restored. It doesn't work. It's as if I've never played the game.

Other people are having this problem too. Some manage to get the game to recognise the file but it claims the saves are corrupt.

It's possible my flu-addled brain has missed something obvious, but I can't get it working at all.

Have u made sure u have the latest gfwl installed. Have you signed it like i said in my post then copied the save games back to the folder. (make sure it overwrites the old stuff.)

Another thing to try. Save a game so you know save game files have been created. Exit then go replace the old with ur saves. Try again to see if it worked?

Has to be some way to fix it. Saves are tied to ur gfwl account name and need to be signed in so as long as thats sorted they should work imo. If not then damn that sucks.

Best of luck with it.

Edit - Hmm. It might not be enough to copy the folder. You may need to copy the actual save game file to a new folder in save game folder. Because i just looked and it has in save game folder a folder called e000000b00000001 with 1 save file in. Maybe when u reinstalled that e000000b00000001 folder is different with a new save profile system so if u just copied ur save game folder and u have 2 folders like e000000b00000001 one might not work while the other does. So ur old saves wont work but others do so ull have to delete ur folder that u copied but move the save game file to the other e000000b00000001 thingy folder and then it may work.

Cheers for the help mate, I'm gonna head to bed but I'll give it a shot in the morning :)

%appdata% is a stupid place to put save games. gta4 does the same thing. it should either be a sub folder of "my documents" or in the game install folder. i can fully understand you being ****** off about this.

AppData is the CORRECT place to put stuff, it is where applications should store their data in multi-user environments.

AppData should not be a hidden folder though :/

This and even children under 10 have no problems with restoring save games........

Some MP games however are protected with advanced anti-cheat systems which you cannot by design copy saves. Batman AA is not one of those you just backup the saves and copy them back into the same folder stucture but ensure you also backup the hidden catalog folder as that contains info your save games need ;)

Also are you using an offline or online GFWL profile as save games are not usually interchangeable between the 2 by design!

You can't write to the game install folder, as it's generally in program files. You'd have to start the game EVERY time with "run as administrator" if you're on Vista or Windows 7 otherwise the game isn't allowed write access to the program files folder.

appdata isn't great though, that's for sure. I'm updating Aliens versus Predator and i'm getting it to save it's savegame and config files in My Documents\My Games\Aliens versus Predator which I think is the best place. folder isn't hidden and it's pretty obvious where it is.

Why did MS create the My Games folder, which seems to be exclusively for the storage of savegames, if they're not going to use it?

Why are you blaming MS for not putting the save games in that folder when they didn't write the game - it's Rocksteady who wrote the game and in all likelyhood decided where to store the saves.

I'd agree that it is annoying though - would certainly make life a lot easier if all savegames actually used that folder.

not really. i'd like to think of a game save like i would a document - something you can easily spend hours working on. sure stick the game preferences there but not the saves.
