Parallel parking is this: ie double parking when you can't be arsed.
What you describe is ordinary parking as far as I'm concerned.

Parallel = 2 lines that don't intersect.

in Belgium if there's not enough room it's common to give a little bisou to the car behind and in front of you to "make" space.

Forget having ding free bumpers in Brussels

I sometimes do that if there is space.
