I was under the impression that Win7 was a new and improved windows Vista, having it core OS based on Vista's core. According to the BBC news on 1 a few mins ago they stated its nothing to do with Vista and tried to sell it as a replacement if you dont like Vista,,,

That's because they don't have a clue what they're talking about. I had a 2 minute rant at the TV, much to my wife's displeasure. The best part was when the technology reporter said he wasn't very familiar with Windows

W7 is built ontop of Vista, but with new features and performance improvements. I've been likening it to 2000 > XP.

The guy on BBC news was an absolute monkey. Why have none-technical people talking about Operating Systems. He had no clue at all.

made me laugh when that reporter said "there's even a new oc sofware out next week called unbunto"

its been out for years!!

He was on about touch-screen technology. Everyone is saying this is make or break for Microsoft - the pre-sales have been unbelievable and they're still saying 'it will be ages before we know if this has been successful'.

Muppets the lot of them. It seems every news story has to be sensationalised.

If the Pre-sales have been unbelievable then quite clearly it won't take ages to see its success :p

Silly BBC.

Also, it's the first OS MS have released in BETA/RC steps to the public (also leaked ¬_¬) and the public has had nothing but praise for. I guess that's down to the fact that today digital distribution is ten fold faster than when Vista came out - plus Vista paved the way by having several years to sort out the drivers.

Silly BBC!

This has been a really good move from MS. They get thousands of users playing with it for months pretty much guaranteeing there won't be any major problems at public launch. The geeks are happy as they get to play early, the public is happy as they get higher quality software, MS is happy as they get months of coverage and feedback...

If only Apple did the same with Snow Leopard and maybe the critical guest account deleting your user account bug wouldn't have shipped!

It seems next month MS are doing the same public beta of Office 2010.

Be no point in Apple doing this as there OS's are designed for there hardware. Couldn't see millions of people out there buying there hardware just so they can test an o/s for free.

I remember reading somewhere, that at the height of Windows 7 beta and RC testing, they were getting some ridiculous number of send feedback reports every minute. Something like 100 every minute, 24 hours a day for 2 weeks or something.

I loved that I could play with Windows 7 early. Even from the beta, there were hardly any bugs that I had to report one.
