Looking to add more storage space and ive used western digital drives for a long time since i had many issues with other makes

Ive been eyeing the 750gb models 32mb cache, so whats the performance difference between green and black ? theres 10 quid difference in price if the green is not much slower then i'll get that , if theres a big difference then black it is

Its mainly for storage but also some media and games that wont fit on my SSD

For £10 I'd be tempted by the black.

I moved from the black to a Samsung Eco drive which I think is similarish to the WD green range. In the real world I find it to be so much slower. Not unusable, but it's very noticeable e.g. while dealing with media file archives etc.

People have said that the green range is quieter but I disagree. My Blacks and Eco's are both inaudible in my case.

Ive been wondering about the samsung drives as a lot of people recommend them, ive used WD for years because they are bomb proof ive found them ultra reliable

how are the F3's for reliability ?

Samsung are crap. I use a green as my desktop storage but I dont ask a lot of it. If your going to be accessing it a lot I would say the black.

In the price range you're looking at you should get the 1TB Samsung F3, £62 (OCUK prices...) and much quicker than both. The WD's - especially the 750GB models - are slower and louder.

I like WD as well, I have a 1tb caviar black and it's a great drive...however now 500gb/platter drives are out...they don't have quite the same access time but transfer speeds are much better. If I were buying a 1tb drive now it would be either a Seagate 7200.12 or Samsung F3.

I'm guessing SpinPoint ~= Black and EcoGreen ~= Green...

But can someone tell me roughly what the F1/F2/F3 designations mean? (Which is best? Is F3 newer than F2, or...?)

Thanks! :)

So, I was planning on getting:

  • 1x WD Black 1 TB for OS/apps/general
  • 2x WD Green 1.5 TB RAID 1 for photographs
But this thread could just convince me to go with Samsung drives instead.

The 1 TB Black obviously corresponds with the SpinPoint F3 1TB (HD103SJ).

But should I be go for the EcoGreen F2 1.5TB (HD154UI) in place of the 1.5 TB Greens? Are there no EcoGreen F3 drives (yet)?

Thanks again! :)

The greens are truly superb they are incredibly quiet and also adjust the speed according to the load required, for storage there is nothing better in my mind.

The Samsung F3 is noisier but MUCH faster but as for reliability it's too soon to tell, they are far too new.

Seagate's had a dreadfull reputation (I had 3 go wrong) with the 11 series drives and they force you to buy a box which costs £9.16 to send the knackered drive back in.

I have had all of the above and still have the F3 and a green 1TB

I have never had a Black so I can't comment.

The F3 is a lot faster than the Black, and the F2's are a bit quicker than the Greens. Both are quieter than their counterparts.

There won't be F3 EcoGreens, that IS the F2's (it's a little confusing since with F1 generation you had F1 and F1 EcoGreen naming). Both are 500GB platter drives, the F2's just run at 5400rpm.

Regarding the older 500gb drives made about 2 years ago from WD and Samsung:
Bought WD 500gb for my htpc(boot drive) and a Samsung 500gb (boot drive) for my gaming pc as they were spose to be faster.
The Samsung is dam noisey and has clicked when booting from cold a few times, a m8 said he had a few samsungs fail even a later 1gb model. Wont be going back to them.
WD 500gb has been on 24/7 for 2+ year and been been quiet and quick, i bought an an extra early green (RE2-GP) 1gb drive and again no issues.
From looking around forums Samsungs seem to have poor reliability, so your better off with WD.

Question: im now looking to go for an win7 upgrade and thinking what new boot + storage drive should i use, it'll be in constant activty 24/7 etc -

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
Western Digital RE4-GP 2TB
Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB

Update: i read the RE green drives are meant for raid setup but they also contain better/more reliable electonics.

I had 3 WD greens 1 TB in my WHS and 2 died in the space of two weeks.

Burning on the PCB. Big wayne and countless others have had the SAME ISSUES.

I got rid as after loosing 200 DVD rips did my head in.

Its documented on the web that same have a firmware issue that ages the greens prematurely.

So it swings and round abouts.

I bought a Seagate 2TB LP drive as a replacement and it cooler, faster, quieter than the greens.

If you want speed go F3 then WD Black. If you want reliabilty go WD..

Sweeping statement.

Look at the colour of that PCB area right in the middle.

This happened to 2 drives in the space of as many weeks.

Exactly what happened to big waynes drive.

My bro has a whole stack of WD Greens (multiple 2Tb RAID5 arrays) - running as a fileserver - so lots of useage - with no problems so far.

That said WD only really became reliable with the AAKS drives onwards so they don't exactly have a proven track record in that dept. and neither does samsung.

Aside from the .11 fiasco seagate has generally been industry leading for reliability - and so far I've not seen problems with the .12s - of which I've used about 15 of them including the ones I've put in PCs I've built for friends/relatives.

If your looking for speed its a bit of an odd one atm - the seagates have extremely fast raw read/write performance but a bit lacking in other areas, the WD Blacks have great all around performance but don't really shine in any one area and the F3s again are very fast at certain things but don't have as good all around performance.
