Hyundais can look good...

I think i've only ever seen one Infinity car over here in my life! I agree though, i don't associate Hyundai with those kind of cars at all.

I like it. Agree somewhat on th branding, however bang-for-second-hand-buck, it'll be tough to be, either the 2.0T, something that will mod nicely if it's only a low-pressure turbo as standard and the big 6-pot will be soooooooo cheap compared to stuff in the same power bracket.

We brits are more accepting that the yanks on brand - people happily buy Skoda VRS' range...

the hyundai coupe has never sold that well though

despite positive reviews from top gear and 5th gear and the wider press.

They need something to give the brand credibility - for skoda it was the fact that a large number of clued up punters knew they were just VWs in a cheap suit.

The Coupe didn't sell well in the mk1 because it had a 1.6 and a 2l engine and only the 2.0 was any good, was FWD and sat at the bottom of a large selection of coupe's available - the 200SX, Celica and Prelude to name but a few. The more credible mk2 was still fwd which put the petrolheads off from buying the 2.7v6 and the girls were also put off from having such a powerful car to mooch around in. The 171bhp developed by the 2.7 was insufficient and the Celica was just a better choice for a small coupe. Add in competition from the Focus ST, CTR as well as the 182 Clio and 206GTi and the young 'uns didn't want it either. Then there were those who can happily afford to wax £20k on a new car as an attractive little runabout or 2nd car and they didn't like the badge.

The Genesis offer RWD and 300bhp - that is FUN! That, at the price, will be difficult to match. This is a car that can kep pace with a 350z to aboce the speed limit. It's something different from the other two, which were, frankly, wet in comparison. Even the 4-pot T is going to have significantly more power than the Mk2 2.7V6, whilst the 6-pot is kichig around 2nd hand M3 power, without the potentially massive service costs. Hell, at 300bhp+ and 60 in less than 6 seconds, there will be appeal to the petrolheads.

Anyway, who actually cares about what Joe Public thiks? Joe Public buys a Corsa and thinks it's a good car. Joe Public buys the mini-MPV's like the Picasso et al and thinks they are good cars. Joe Public is an idiot and no amount of branding will change this. A Corsa 1.2 owner I know was telling me how much of a hairdresser car my MX-5 was and still spouting crap about the 3.2S Boxster being a poor man's Porsche. That is from man who waxed the neck end of £10k on a Corsa BRAND NEW!

They've got the same brand image problem as a lot of these companies - hyundai make dishwashers and televisions - why would you want a car from them too? I don't want a Hotpoint GTR in the same way I dont want an Aston Martin toaster (actually, I wouldnt mind one of those)

I personally think a rebranding would do wonders - what would Jo Public prefer - a Daewoo or a Chevrolet?

A sub brand yes, a rebrand no because rebranding won't gain public attention that much for weaker brand names - look how many Kia cars are bought!

I never actually knew Kia were owned by Hyundai. They need to come up with a good name that makes people think of premium cars, not white goods

I don't know, are Kia owned by Hyundai? I just said Kia because it's the first cheap generic brand I could think of as Honda may offend some people here :p

Oh.

Get out of my head!

FWIW I would so get one of those Genesis coupes, it would end up looking like the red OP, something that looks so good has to be so right =]

Would have to do something about the silver console trim though....

The Americans are loving the 2.0T by the looks of it....but then again youngsters over there love BOOOOOOOST y0.

On the main Hyundai website, it shows it has LSD, so M car fun as well? :p

P.S.
Anyone seen the mega pricey options list?

Options are limited to carpeted floor mats and an iPod/USB cable.

hmmm I wonder what the retail will be on these? I for one don't mind its standard looks and I actually quite like the interior.
