Tell me about Mattress'

Go to a shop and lie on them. Make sure the mattress is on the same type of base as your bed is at home eg slats, divan etc as this makes a big difference to how the mattress feels.

As for budget always spend more on a mattress than you would a sofa as you spend more of your life on your mattress than you do your sofa and a good night's sleep is really important.

Some people like memory foam but it's a personal thing. I find that I get too hot (naturally hot person with just a sheet in summer and a 4 tog duvet in winter) so memory foam is a no-go for me.

We've just had this joy
Recommended (by the local independent furniture store) a sprung mattress with a cushion top - as mentioned above, we were told that latex / memory foam can be very hot, so having a top layer of foam / padding (he said 7cm is more than enough) on top of continuous or pocket springs allows the air to circulate whilst still offering he flexibility of foam.
We ended up ordering a medium firm 15.25 gauge continuous sprung mattress with 448 springs & in-built cushion top - what this actually means in terms of comfort - I don't know!
But in kingsize it was the best quality we could afford after splashing out on a new bed frame too!!

Why not go and try out places like furniture village and the such like, have a good old bounce on their beds, see what you like, then go and find it cheaper online!!

Glad someone had the balls to ask about such a dull thing :p

I need a new mattress too, but it has to get up into the attic room through a hole in the floor about 600mm x 1000mm... And it has to be kingsize. Can a memory foam mattress be folded in half for a couple of minutes without damaging it? The last mattress i put up there (a standard spring mattress) ended up with a ridge along the length of it on the fold line :(
when i get my memory foam mattress the other week it was vacuum packed into a fairly small cylinder. granted mine was double, but king wont be much bigger.

I was so comfortable in a Premier Inn the other night that I stripped the bed to see what make mattress it was.

I'm now after a Hypnos mattress, but I do need to lie on a few before I make my decision! Looking at about £500 for a kingsize by the looks of it. It's well worth it though. I was so confy at the weekend I didn't want to get up, and I wanted to go to bed early!

That degree of compression does adversely affect the mattress over time, but not much. They don't quite expand to their original state afterwards, apparently.

I had heard the memory foam mattresses and toppers can get quite hot, so as I am prone to getting quite hot in bed (no funny comments please!!) we went for this polyester mattress topper which doesn't need shaking every morning like a feather one as it just springs back to original shape. It's been really comfy and improved our sleep no end.

Most of the Memory Foam mattress' that come in rolls tend to be quite cheap and not that comfortable.

I was looking for a new mattress recently and tried quite a few out. I think to get a decent Memory Foam mattress you have to spend quite a lot of money.

The best way really though is just to go to a few bed stores and try lying on a few until you find the one you like.

I eventually went for a Sealy traditional sprung mattress which I found was more comfortable than a Memory Foam, which is what I was originally thinking I would get.
