Save the planet - go vegetarian....

i watched something on tv about insects having more protein in them than steak and being far better for the environment. they were trying to persuade more people in europe to eat them like the rest of the world

Percentage wise maybe, but you'd have to eat a lot of beetles to get your protein!! After you mate! :D

We don't need meat any more, it's the reason why heart related illnesses are the number one killer in western society and the reason why we are having higher rate of obese people every year, it's because people still continue to eat meat without exercising, 'but' what people don't get is that most of these people over indulging themselves on meat wouldn't be over weight in the first place if they eat a healthy vegetarian diet, and therefore wouldn't need to 'actively' do any extra exercise beyond their normal every day activities, people need to match their diet around their lifestyle.

People are still eating a diet that is from the stone age, in that age it made sense to eat meat as we were hunter gatherers and needed to, today people are consuming a stone age diet while doing a 9-5 office job, it's just not required any more beyond for-filling our taste buds.

And on top of that the meat industry is thee most environmentally destructive industry on the planet, the only thing it's really good for is putting people in jobs and making money (which isn't all bad of course).

A do agree with Nitely, it would be hard to dissolve the meat industries but I think it could be done over time, and tbh I think it will happen naturally as a part of our evolutionary process anyway, but at a lower rate of change.

Europe has achieved a thing called "civilization" unlike those countries.

Whilst it makes perfect scientific sense to do this i wont. Though i also wont make a tool of myself either talking about eating meat like its something speshul .

In my utopian civilization i'm pretty sure we/they would all be vegetarians as its a far more efficient way to farm.

That article makes me want to go and kill 100 cows and eat them all (and I'm a vegetarian).

Hate the preachy idiots that try and force it on others.

Do you have a source for that?

Well jsut looking at the graphs you've posted you can see the rise is tailing off, and look at supermarkets and the fact more and more restaurants are now fully vegetarian friendly, vegan friendly etc... There's a huge rise in the western world of tree hugger diets. Well not everywhere, sensible countries like France, Italy, Germany and Spain still eat lots of meat! :D However my point is that in general there's less of a need/call for meat in the western world it seems. This is an observation - I'm at work and can't really spend that long doing that sort of research - I'm sure you'll find some unbiased source to prove my machinations completely incorrect. Either way I don't particularly care much as I think it's all a bunch of rubbish. :)

There are real health benefits to eating less meat.

We evolved over 100s of 1000s of years mainly on soups and nuts and berries meat was very rare and usually taken in soups. It is not good for our bodies to eat meat every day.

I love meat and can't get enough of it but it makes sense for us to cut down on our meat intake. Also I don't think you can get more from a field of veg than a field of cows. Most cows I've seen (I live in the country) eat grass, as far as I'm aware grass costs virtually nothing to produce and you can pack quite a few cows in a field. They produce milk for us as well. Where's the proof that a cultivated field would produce more to eat than a field of cows?

Yay I've learned something from this thread

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet

Much better for us and the environment rather than eating mass produced grains.

So what you're saying is if you eat a balanced diet with meat, and exercise (as humans are designed to do both) then eating meat is fine... well that's what your first paragraph states. So making a statement that we don't need meat is a little silly don't you think? We're designed to eat meat, and are able to extract a lot of nutrients from it. Plus, it's delicious, and therefore releases dopmaine, and gives you a good happy feeling which is just as important to physical health - there's a synergistic link between mental health and phsycial health.

I say address other enviromental concerns before penalising everyone else who enjoys a well rounded diet. Going vegetarian is such a ridiculous statement to make. Evolution is all well and good, but adaptation is part of it too surely?

Furthermore I know plenty of vegetarians that are overweight, and have high cholesterol owing to the high levels of saturated fats they eat in some of their diets.

Excluding parts of a diet is not healthy, a broadrange of foods is FAR healthier. But looking after yourself and exercising is also vital. Blaming meat eaters for heart disease is rubbish, blaming lazy people is more correct but still skewed.

TBH I think it goes hand in hand, lets be realistic, most people aren't prepared to exercise, yet they want to eat a lot of meat with Saturated fat's, why eat meat when you don't have to when for many it requires that you need to burn off those fats with extra exercise, yes no doubt there are vegetarians out there that are overweight but I can guarantee that compared to meat eaters they are are a very small minority.

Why address other 'environmental concerns' when it has already pretty been scientifically proven that the meat industry is the number one industry in the world that is damaging the environment the most over any other industry on the planet, surely the 'thing' that is causing the most damage environmentally should be top priority.

Sat fat is not the problem infact its essential for the production of many things in the body including the thing that makes us men, testosterone.
Recently a few studies have actually began to realise that the problem is the trans fats which have always just been lumped in with the sat fats when the results have been published.
