Just took a notion to download Quake 2 and try it out on my Lenovo S10e netbook... and fallen in love with it again! Runs perfectly, except for my odd screen resolution (1024x578). Does anyone remember the console or config code to force screen res?

Anyone who played Quake 2 back in the day, get it now and tell me it isn't still a blast! Anyone who is too young to remember Quake 2 what are you waiting for, get some education! Brings back so many memories, mostly of having to endure software rendering until I finally saved up for my Voodoo. Now I can play it perfectly on a machine which cost me 1/10th of the amount and is only 1.3kg  Those were the days :D

Amazong fun. The recoil on the machine gun was the first time I'd encountered such a thing in a shooter, and the entire thing was a blast - I played through the first one again about 2 years ago, and that brought back some memories, especially trying to find the gate for the nightmare difficulty again. Now I've gotta get the second running.

In the console, try:

r_mode -1
r_customHeight xxxx
r_customWidth xxxx

Edit: and then do vid_restart to apply the changes.

i used to love Q2 and I own lenovo s10e so I guess I owe to myself to try this. Is the MP scene still active? I used to play Lithuim servers with a the runes and Hook , happy days

The weapons were so well designed, they felt so satisfying.
Agreed. Don't know about anyone else, but the weapons in that 'other' big FPS felt too sci fi to me and just lacked punch. You just can't beat the good ole double barrel shotgun.

Can anyone still remember how to do the timedemo in quake 2..?

I remember i use to get something like 29FPS at 640x480 with a voodoo1,about 32mb ram and intel Pentium 200mhz@233mhz CPU :p

You can't use custom screen res in Q2 like that...

If you need different screen resolutions, etc. pickup either the Q2 MAX client or one of the R1Q2, etc. clients...

For a simple dirty benchmark bind a key to timerefresh and it will pan around the scene and give a framerate...

Apart from the rocket launcher for me personally.

It's shooting felt nice, just a shame it lacked some power to the impact of the explosions.

I remember the first experience with the BFG, holy ****!!

And the soundtrack was actually pretty good too. I quite like the techno tune that played right at the start of the first level.

I also remember that it was one of the first FPS I played online, back on crappy 33.6k dial-up modem on the MSN Gaming Zone or whatever it was.

Q2 has one of the best soundtracks of any game imo... perfectly sets the atmosphere... tho not sure what techno tune your referring to - the soundtracks are mostly metal with maybe a slight techno edge.

My fav tracks from the soundtrack:

The Underworld (5)
Descent into Cerberon (8)
Climb (9)
Showdown (10)

Looks like my s10e has plenty of grunt to spare for higher res mods (I don't have much desire to play this on my main PC)... Can any one recomend a good one?

AFAIK the onlys ones with any level of maturity are Q2 Max and Q2 Evolved... and aside from the enhanced rendering support, the texture, models, etc. reduxes tend to look pretty naff imo.
