Failure rate of newer xbox's?

My DVD drive is dying and my Elite is out of warranty, has anyone replaced a DVD drive? Or should I just have MS fix it and pay whatever the going rate is?

DVD drives are trickier than you'd expect. They're keyed to the xbox 360 they come with, so just swapping in a new drive isn't sufficient. You also have to reprogram it to match the 360 it's going into.

Means a new optical drive comes out a little over £50 to get it done in a repair shop, I don't know if the reprogramming is something that can realistically be done at home for a lower cost.

So new 360's come with no leads at all to connect it to a TV?
Do Elite's still come with the optical/analog audio dongle?

Didnt get any cable (apart from power lol) or dongle with my jasper bought on the street a couple of weeks ago

So many people must fall for buying the official MS hdmi cable at £10 that can be bought for £2/3 in non brand shops

Can be done easily with DOSflash. Just read the firmware from the old drive and re-flash the new drive.

I've flashed loads of new drives this way.

I had 2 DVD drives in 2 of the older models.Just kept swapping them and finally got one of the models that has the HDMI slot on the back, which I believe has improved innards, and that has been fine for nearly 2 years now.

They aren't, but as Aspect has found, the Opus chipset can be used. This gives a 65nm CPU, but still a 90nm GPU. It does run cooler but as I said before, the fundamental design of the Xbox 360 hasn't changed since day one and if thermal flexing occurs, a RRoD is possible.

+1

I'm still fixing RRoD's and E74 from 360's both old and new......

Bad, bad design. I wonder if the increased sales figures of the 360 is related to people buying 2 or 3 of the consoles? I personally know at least a dozen people who have bought 2, some are even on their 3rd!

They should all come with the basic component cable at least, weird yours had none.

The newer machines come with a composite cable plus scart adapter only, similar to what the PS3 has always done.

I've never understood the logic of supplying a "next-gen" console that can't output HD out of the box.

So the Jasper is apparently much improved?

God yes! I used to use my old 360 as a supplemental heater (not kidding) during the winter. My new Jasper doesn't even get warm to the touch, difference between night and day.

Simple logic is MS make even more money. But I know where you're coming from.

My third 360 just RROD on me and it is outta warranty now... and I want a HDMI capable one so if I bought one of the Forza 3 Super Elite packs (the 250GB model) am I more likely to get one of the newer model/build 360's you reckon? Or they likely to bung a 250gb hdd on a older elite and chuck that int eh box?

Don't fancy shelling out that much dough again, only to be given an old stock elite!

glad to see the console is still noisy as ever.

That's really shocking. I got an Xbox 360 Elite a couple of weeks back here in the states. My friend's Xenon was a noisy and hot sod. The DVD drive on it was loud when reading discs but the fans were just as bad not to mention the heat that came out of it. The Elite I bought is a Jasper and it runs very cool and quiet. Can't really compare it with my 80gb PS3 since it contends with an air conditioner but when installing games to the HDD, the DVD drive is silent and whilst gaming, the fans don't go into overdrive and little heat comes out the back.

Am i right in saying the newer chips have a lower power usage? In which case, would an original power supply still be suitable for them?

I'm a bit concerned after reading this thread. I was going to be getting an elite xbox 360 but if the failure rate is so high, why are Microsoft still selling them?
