Sky BB

Ok I joined Sky last night :D

Got HD and the unlimited BB, 1 question,

What router are they sending out at the moment?

I'd guess some version of the Netgear DG834G or Sagem
Mines the grey DG834G and looks like a mini Sky box.

Its not great by any stretch but it gets the job done, I also tried my mates Draytek on my line and saw no increase in pings / speeds what so ever so Ive just stuck with it.

I have had zero problems with Sky since September.

Line was activated on the date given. Once DLM (Digital Line Management) had finished, I called Sky on a Sunday morning and was immediately put through to tier2 who then increased my line to its max and asked me if I game online. They then set my max delay to 8 and I get pings in the 30's.

It's been rock solid since and I have only ever turned the router off to test another.

All this for £10 a month with max download speed even between 6pm - 11pm. Well worth it :)

Up yours BT :p

mine should be ready 12 nov

whats the number to get bumped to max and do i have wait for the normal training period?

If you have a Sky phone just call 150, and choose the options that go to having a BB fault/problem, not sure on the number if you have BT tho.

Yes, you have to wait for DLM to finish before ringing up. It will probably be set to 4Mb/s for the first 2-3 days, then start to increase.

Hi guys, I am on the mid Sky BB package and only see about 3.5Mb/s. Would I be able to get any more if I upgraded to their max product (only £5 more)? Is it the case that if my line can only do 3.5 it can only do 3.5 full stop, or will they enable some speedier stuff?

Cheers

not got sky talk yet, recently tied in with bt for calls doh

oh and after adsl24 supposedly fixing it i can now get 3mb , great was getting 6.5-7 when i signed up.

roll on sky

I just left plusnet for adsl24 but in the back of my mind I was considering the Sky option as I have Sky TV and my exchange is Sky LLu'd. Anyway, ADSL24 should get connected tomorrow so I'll give em a go but as it's only a 1 month contract I wouldn't have to wait long if I decided to jump ship again and having read more about Sky's LLU service on here I think I might just do that.

LLU enabled means 3rd party providers have thier own equipment in your local exchange and with sky this means you can have access to the on-net bb products such as base, everyday and unlimited. However the distance you are from the exchange and the quality of you line will have a huge effect on what speeds you get. Sky analyse their lines using the standard bt adsl checker so use this online to see what kind of speeds sky should be able to provide. Usually sky can actually provide a slightly higher speed than the one returned but don't guarentee it.

PS:I work for sky!

Sky's estimates of what speed you'll get are terrible, for me they said i'd be able to get around 4Mb/s, atm im synced at just over 19Mb/s. Be/BT etc all said 10-20Mb/s, so luckily i ignored sky's estimate and got it anyways, hoping Be/BT's were closer to being correct :p.

Mark66: You should already be on their LLU service if it's available, as it is a lot cheaper to put you on that than on BT Wholesale, so you probably won't see any speed increases, you will be able to download as much as you want tho, so it's upto you whether this is worth it or not. For me it was, as i said i was estimated 4Mb/s, so getting unlimited would have been a waste speed wise, but i download 7GBs of TV shows shown in america a week, so 10GB a month wasn't enough for me (and luckily the speed i was able to get was completely wrong, so i got faster internet too :D).

Well O2 for a start. As well as any ISP offering an LLU service that uses ADSL2+, which includes Orange, TalkTalk etc. Flashing around a sync speed figure as an indication of ISP quality is pointless.

No but it is an idication of what the OP could expect.

All the above ISP's impose FUP's, throttles or traffic management of some sort. None of which Sky do.

I get a constant 1800 kbps all day, regardless of the time of day. Of course my location and line quality help but again I'll re-iterate, where will I get that elsewhere for £10 p/m?

Answer = Nowhere

You're answering a question that was never asked. The post I replied to presented a set of line sync figures and asked where else that would happen for £x per month - and the answer is any ISP that uses ADSL2+.

If you don't understand the difference between sync speed and IP throughput then that's not my problem.

The line stats for a particular user on a particular ISP are of no use to anybody who isn't using that same line.

For £10 a month? umm no.

umm, yes.

o2 20mb. £9.79 a month. (or £13.11 for the first year. see below)

but oh noes, i'm subject to a fair use policy (which has never been enforced on anyone, ever)

edit: and whilst on the subject of money, at the moment you can sign up with o2 and get 3 months free. plus £75 cashback from www.topcashback.co.uk. so that's 9x9.79 = 88.11 - £75 = £13.11 for a years "upto" 20mb broadband. (this doesn't take into account the vat charge increase admittedly). i'm too lazy to look at any offers sky are running at the moment. can they compete with this?

got 2 mates in work with Sky BB on their LLU service. Hope you get a router other than the Sagem as its complete rubish and both had issues with it, random disconnections all the time.

Sky then sent one of them a Netgear one after complaining and thats been rock solid.

I've been using sky for a while and very happy with the service.

Even better now my service has been upgraded and I can connect at 19 meg speeds now.

The point is its there and enforceable should network contention become an issue.

I'm sure Sky would impose one if contention did become an issue but for now it doesn't exist so is by definition a truly unlimited option.

If you aint got Sky and are on O2 already then that O2 option is very competitive.
