What would you do in this situation

Can the petty bickering, references to "gay", "idiot" and other personal attacks on members stop.

One more indescretion and I close the thread. I'm not editing the posts.

But this doesn't address my point - what if the OP had been somewhere where getting out would not really have been an option, or would potentially have been more unsafe than in a taxi with a driver on a mobile.

I don't think it is particularly dangerous but that is somewhat risky, but the fact is if you are paying for a service you have every right to expect them to provide that service, which is to be driven to your destination in a safe and legal fashion. They failed to provide this service, even after OP tried to ensure they did (shouldn't have even had to do this, but I guess it could have slipped the drivers mind that it was illegal to use his mobile)

At the end of the day, I don't think it is worth losing any sleep over, but I still think OP was in the right (but yes, stupid to allow the taxi driver to know where he lives)

He could pay, get out, and say that he would not use that firm again because he doesn't agree that driving whilst on the phone is safe.

He may also go on to say he will report him etc

still failing to address my point - in my view (and I could be wrong on this), if you get in a taxi, you have every right to expect them to take you the full journey safely and legally, and there's no disclaimer that says 'if the driver starts breaking the law, pay him the fare up to that point, and get out, regardless of where you are and how convenient that is for you...I know the OP says he was nearly home, but so what? What if had been in the middle of moss side at 3am? Or on the motorway?

Jesus Christ this thread is hilarious, but not in a ha ha way, more of an i feel sorry for the OP way. I drove home last night with a headlight out, am i satan?

Would you rather he had pulled over in a safe place and answered his phone, whilst keeping the meter running and costing you more money? In reality he did you a favour by not stopping. And you go and get him fired. Nice :)

I didn't say get out at that point :p

I would complete the journey then take the driver's number and report him in the correct way. Annoying him whilst in the cab risks you getting booted out / abused / your property damaged.

I agree it isn't expected to allow him to break the law but once your in the taxi you have 2 choices: get out, or stay put.

If a bus was ferrying people around at night with a light out would you not think that is serious ? why should a Taxi be any different ?, although driving with a light out or while holding a phone in your hand is wrong across the bored I do think it's worse when a company that is providing transport for the general public has drivers working for them that are driving illegally and putting these peoples lives in potential danger.

Ok, fair enough you are saying pay the full fare then report him etc?

That's a reasonable approach. Personally I'd have gone with the do a runner a distance from home and keep the evidence in case he follows up, and not report. That way I get free taxi fare for the hassle, and he loses a taxi fare but not his job.

Sorry, i wasnt saying that driving with a headlight out or while using a phone is fine, i was just joking that the way the OP handled the situation was rather poor in my opinion. A bit of an overreaction :)

What would the OP have done though if the taxi drivers headlight had gone out mid journey? Would he have photographed and reported him for dangerous driving and refused to pay the full fare? Its just as dangerous if not more than using a phone at the wheel, limited visibility of the road and pedestrians and other road users will think you are a motorbike.

I had this happen to me on one of the rare occasions i get a taxi back from a night out (usually walk, only takes about an hour and a bit).
He picked up his phone, and started talking on it, I said, hang up or pull over and let me out, so he hung up.

It's just rude if you ask me, not to mention dangerous and illegal. Some idiot in a merc which his dad had obviously paid for as he was a young guy, some taxi drivers are sound as a pound, have a nice conversation with them and sometimes get a bit knocked off your fair, but this guy was obviously a complete berk.

lmao B+W... funny posts

and op, yea was a bit over the top. If he was driving at the speed limit and on his phone then there wouldnt really be an issue, was a bit of a childish thing to do.

at the end of the day why should I pay the full price if he is going to put my life in danger.
You don't, and I'm sure the police would agree. You certainly wouldn’t pay a drunken taxi driver.

Really you should have asked to get out the moment he answered his phone though. Not waited until you got home.

I don't think the poilce would see it that way.
