Chelsea banned from signing players for 2 transfer windows

It's fairly standard practice to suspend punishment while going through an appeal process. It's happened before with transfer bans and it's not surprising it has happened here.

This is of no surprise to me at all. They are taking a significant risk that the ban may be extended if it is enforced though.

Given Chelsea have 4 top players off to the ACN at the beginning of next year, and the new premier league regulations being enforced at the beginning of next season, this is a big break for Chelsea.

IIRC the rules for next season are that your squad may only consist of 25 players in total, and 7 of those players are supposed to be "home grown". By home grown, this is nothing to do with nationality, but whether they had 3 years of being trained in England or Wales prior to thier 21st birthday. There was something else about age which I can't remeber off the top of my head.

As an Arsenal fan, I actually have some sympathy with Chelsea here, I have been lead to believe that they only have 7 players who match the "home grown" requirement, while ironically most of Arsenal's squad meets the requirement. This could have been a big bear trap for Chelsea, the combination of regulation changes and a transfer ban.

a much more rude version just came from my lips !!!!

edit - but as stated above hardly a surprise

Maybe Im being cynical but the Widow could have invented that story of "just discovering the paperwork and not knowing what it was" at the behest of Chelsea (or any team you care to mention)

IF Chelsea did something wrong in their transfer then almost every other club in the world should have had the same transfer ban inposed. It was a ridiculous ban, players move around, every club is in contact with players before they make a bid for them otherwise its simply wasted time.

Some clubs do it ultra legally, by talking with a players managers, sisters, brothers, newphew, some clubs talk to the player, anyone that thinks its not normal is kidding themselves.

IF, and its a big IF, there were far stricter rules on transfer that no one abused then fine, punish them, but its not a very well kept secret this is how transfers have worked for years, and years, and years. Punishing one club, was akin to punishing Eduardo alone and no one else for a dive, ridiculous.

Judging by some posts, some of you have completely misunderstood what's happened.

CAS, who are an independent body, have ruled that the ban should be suspended until after the appeal is heard. It's got nothing to do with FIFA nor have Chelsea got away with anything. Surely it's only common sense that any punishment is deferred until a final judgement is given?

In some ways I think this is very fair. It's a stay of execution for Chelsea who will now have one more transfer window to prepare for a season or two without any additions to their squad.
