BT BROADBAND SERIOUSLY WTH?!?!

sky were also a rip, my mother got it in as a package and i spoke to the bloke on the phone to ask what exactly she gets in monthly usage, he told me 5gb a month, i also asked do you (sky) provide any software to check her usage so she would be self assured not to go over - simply put he said no.

Anyway, 2 months later she got rather large bills on her account saying she went over her 1gb a month allowance.

what a complete con they are, also she does not get the speeds she was told she would.

The morale of the story is you cannot trust these companies, no matter how popular they are, this is why i am also not suprised with your circumstances.

Heh, Sky told me i'd get around 4Mb/s, but i sync at 19Mb/s :p.

well whatever you do dont go anywhere near virgin. especially if you live in newcastle. im on 50meg and barely ever get above 1meg on speedtests and the ping is always over 1000ms with constant packet loss. iplayer and youtube are unusable, games unplayable and web browsing takes forever.
virgin say theres a problem with the lines, theyre sorry theyre trying to work on it. well its been 6 weeks they have done nothing, if anything its getting worse, and all they do is take £20/month off. great, so were still paying like £50/month for absolutely unusable internet.
genuinely the worst company for anything ever in the world. i despise virgin.

sky lie, i was looking at the virgin broadband deals, seem much more better then anywhere else ive seen.

like you need it that fast :o :p

I do, i had to download 30Gig of games off steam, and the HL2 Cinematic mod(10 gig) last night :p.

Oh, and i wouldn't touch virgin either, hated their traffic management when i was with them, what's the point in having 20Mb internet if i can only use it when im asleep? :(.

Even with STM you can download over 100GB a day easily, do you realy use that much bandwidth?. There are some ISPs that would charge extra for download that ammount in a day, or possibly even disconect you, all VM do is slow you down for 5 hours. During prime time you even have 3.5GB limit before STM even takes effect, that should be plenty for the vast majority of people.

Yeah, it's fine for most people, but i'd go over that cap almost every day :p.

0.2mb? In no attempt to rub that in at all, I just did a check:

BT aint all that bad but you beat my upload speed that's for sure.

I've been with BT for years now as there isn't anyone much better on my exchange, they've been fine 99% of the time even if the pings are a bit high, i get throttled at peak times to 170k and currently there is something a bit...wrong with my line as the above speedtest shows.

'fess up guys, how've you managed those?

I really do wish i could tell you..
The test was ran when my connection went funny, basically it will let me browse any site, run msn etc as normal, but wont let me download (downloads running before it goes funny are capped to 120k and then stop) youtube sits on the black screen for a long time, then loads everything instantly, the same thing happened with the speed test, it sat there doing nothing, then bang everything at once, restarting my router doesn't fix it but restarting my computer does, problem has persisted over two operating systems and two network cards.

Mainly happens when downloading with flashget and between the time BT throttles me, since im downloading now with no problem.

Have always used BT Broadband since moving from dial up and TBH it hasn't been too bad. However recently moved over to the "Unlimited" package from the basic one as they were firing off warnings each time our monthly usage approached 7Gb with 10Gb limit (managed to get 12 months at Option 2 price though). However since then the service has deteriorated rapidly, not done a speed test but notice that everything is slower.

IMHO this new Sky Player is causing particular problems for BT, my missus has been using it on the X-Box as an alternative to multiroom and even at low resolution has been getting warnings flash up that the Broadband speed can't keep up with the streaming.

I definitely get the impression they are throttling when detecting Sky Player usage, even though our monthly bandwidth is probably not much more than the Option 2 limit anyway.

If downloads and streaming media - including HD material - is to have any future - then BT (and other ISP's) need to wake up and smell the coffee. The infrastructure needs to be capable of supporting and delivering the bandwidth these services require and not at an extortionate price. At the moment the service can drop all too easily to a kind of "Dial Up +" speed and fair usage needs to recognise people may well be looking to download or stream 1Gb files as a matter of routine.

May think about switching at the end of 12 months but note from above that Sky and Virgin are equally pathetic.

Here is my story

Sign up to bt unlimited 20mb
Was told i should get 6mb
Only got 1.5mb

They sell you a 20mb broadband package but tell you you should only get 6mb (just about a quarter of the advertised speed) and then you actually only get 1.5mb?

You need to cancel as soon as possible as that is just way beyond acceptable and should be covered by the Sales of Goods Act (it is not fit for purpose) and somebody needs to do something about this UP TO xMB b******* that companies do.

Thank the Goddess I live in a cabled area. I pay for 20mb and I get 20mb.

I can't see how else they can do it, ADSL speed depends on line lengh and the quality of the line, it's up to 8mb on ADSL as that is what you would get if you were right next to the exchange, they gave him an estimate of 6mb after checking his line lengh, as he is getting 1.5mb there is clearly a problem, this could be a problem in his house or his area is over subscribed.

BT are currently increasing the bandwidth further back in the next work between the BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) and the CMSAN (Copper equipment in the exchange). Don't expect much though, some services have gone from 24 to 40mb, others are getting 8mb increase at a time. (This is a service with multiple broadband customers on it)
