BT BROADBAND SERIOUSLY WTH?!?!

I'd complain to the ISPA and get out of that contract. I complained to them about o2 and got out of contract with a MAC code. Signed upto the "usable" ADSL24 Office 45 package.

o2's fix for Access service is to enable all exchanges. When they do that i'll sign back up. Could be years for that to happen though. Was on the Be IRC page and the guys there said if your exchange serves less than about 7,000 you are out of luck.

I'm gonna give that Talk Talk Pro afew months to see how it copes with all the downloaders and then move over.

Broadband in this country is just a mess. A lot of us are on phone lines 20+ years old and the exchanges are all maxed out because so many people are on them. Not everywhere has fibre optics either.

I got BT for both phone and broadband("unlimited"). Like the original poster, I had about 0.1 mbps all day yesterday but then my phone lines are also not working and after trying everything, they are sending an engineer tomorrow.

Broadband checker results

We have tested your line to see what speed is available for you and our tests confirm that your line supports BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum connection speed to be 0.512Mbps. This is the fastest speed your line can support.

Im getting confused by all this though. This is the result from just now while speedtest.net shows me a download speed of 2.89mbps. Two weeks ago,the BT test told me that my line supported speed is 2.5 mbps. What should I make out of this?

well whatever you do dont go anywhere near virgin. especially if you live in newcastle. im on 50meg and barely ever get above 1meg on speedtests and the ping is always over 1000ms with constant packet loss. iplayer and youtube are unusable, games unplayable and web browsing takes forever.
virgin say theres a problem with the lines, theyre sorry theyre trying to work on it. well its been 6 weeks they have done nothing, if anything its getting worse, and all they do is take £20/month off. great, so were still paying like £50/month for absolutely unusable internet.
genuinely the worst company for anything ever in the world. i despise virgin.

ah dam it, seems not one company/service is good

Just to say i was told i would get 6 not 20. Its up to 20mb depending on several factors.
Im guna phone and ask to leave and hopefully they will send an engineer round and fix the problem

I live in a village and use BT, and haven't had any major problems with them, usually get 6.5Mb/s , which isn't bad considering being in a village. I doubt very much we are going to get LLU from Be anytime soon.

By the way, does anyone get less speed than me, to make me feel better about only getting 2 meg? :p

(if I lived in the countryside I wouldn't mind, but I live in the suburbs of a sizeable town)

Have you tried investigating what the problem is? Like a stuck bras profile or shoddy cable/wiring, etc.

As for BT advice what non-LLU is considered a better option for around the same price of their Option 1? A guy I know is going to leave Tiscali (really poor speeds) and join BT with the Homehub being an incentive. I suggested Newnet 12GB package and buying a router, but it will probably fall on deaf ears due to the extra cost.

I am also with BT and during the hours of 5-6pm til 12am its useless. Downloads are a MAX 100k/sec I can not watch youtube or anything on Iplayer (Iplayer tells me I need at least 1mb).

Rest of the time I can get alright download speeds its just when I actually want to watch stuff I cant.

Also this UPTO 8mb crap annoys me! Granted I know the limits of ADSL but when I pay the same as someone who can get a much better connection than me I think it some what unfair. Upto 8mb should be what ever BT charge normally, anything less should be priced accordingly.

True :)

I live in a small village in the middle of nowhere on the edge of Salisbury plain and get 8meg:eek:

Exactly the same for me 4pm till midnight the internet is utter useless.

OP

Please post your line stats from your BT Homehub/router

1. Attenuation up/down
2. SNR up/down
3. Sync Speed up/down

BT do use draconian (ie awfully configured) traffic management at peak times, seen quite a few of my customers who have issues with them - nothing wrong with other BT ADSL Max/IPStream ISPs on the same exchange either.

You'd think with their acquisition of Plusnet, they would have at least learnt how to configure their DPI hardware properly.

So you'd care about saving 50p a month or so? Providing a 3Mb service via BTw costs more or less the same as providing an 8Mb service, so who should eat the costs?

Im not sure what my upload/download speeds are (In uni atm so ill check when I get home). A quick check on my netbook tho and Im getting 400k from the Ashby building wireless. At home Ive had 3mb/s but thats been down to 1mb/s at lowest. I live in carnmoney which is about 7KM or so from the city center.
