Well the only problem would be (if we want to narrow this down..)
Is: What are their motivations? their intentions? Basically these entities exist (in some form) and they are apparently seen to be involving themselves in another species (ie us) either negatively or positively.
So we have to ask what is their relationship to us? Is it cattle? Is it as you would look in on an endangered species? Or what?
So we can imagine all sorts of terrifying scenarios but thats a product of our own mind. (how much our own mind plays in Reality is another question)
We know less than nothing imo tbh... just a load of anecdotal evidence and the scientific studies that are done show that we are disturbingly susceptible to influence regarding Reality. That is, it is possible to scientifically create a terrifying situation experienced on the part of the subject.
This to me shows not that there are a bunch of aliens out there abducting us, messing with us (+ on whatever conspiracy you like).
More rather that reality is more complex than simply there being an external world and we are autonomous, separate subjects existing in this external world.
imo the Reality (TM) "map" (or what we think of what Reality is and how it works..talking basic definitions here) has to be utterly utterly redrawn and re-written.
Explaining something in terms of something else which is also not explained isn't really an explanation.
We don't understand sleep paralysis but then we dont actually know why we sleep either. There are theories and some have more credence than others but thats all it is - is a theory. I would say as a species we understand very little - however we have "knowledge" about a great many things.
oh and Define "nothing".

I've seen flaming Satans, had 3 "alien doctors" come and inject me, had snakes cruelling in my room and many many other things. Guess what it's not aliens. It's sleep paralysis. These are all usually reaquering. before anyone says we don't understand sleep paralysis fully. We do know what stages of sleep we are in and brain waves, we also know there is nothing in the room.
