My girlfriend wanted a new phone and after seeing my Android powered HTC Magic she was sold. But my phone was a bit bigger than what she was after and she wanted to stay on Orange as she had been with them for a long time and never had a problem with them.
Went into the Orange shop and looked at the HTC Tattoo. I had already seen reviews on the net and thought it looked great. She had a quick play and went for it. Get it home all connected fine, logged into her Google account... but hang on... where is the Google Mail application?
Turns out Orange have butchered the OS and removed Google Mail, Google Talk and the Youtube app!! There is a hack to get Google Mail back on but it is not 100% stable as Orange have changed the permissions making looking at images or attachments in e-mails impossible as it forces the app crash. So it was either use the Orange email service (as if anyone would do that when they already have a Google mail account) or do what i've done and connect her to her Google e-mail using IMAP, not perfect but works fine for her.
I was most disappointed to find that not only have HTC added a naff overlay on top of the OS (hogging resources unnecessarily), Orange then have further ripped out some good bits! The odd thing is that Contacts and Calendars are synced from her Google account as normal.
So much for Android being about choice and integration with Google, not in the hands of Orange it would seem.
Orange: Sort this out ASAP! get an update out to users to give them the choice!
