My girlfriend wanted a new phone and after seeing my Android powered HTC Magic she was sold. But my phone was a bit bigger than what she was after and she wanted to stay on Orange as she had been with them for a long time and never had a problem with them.

Went into the Orange shop and looked at the HTC Tattoo. I had already seen reviews on the net and thought it looked great. She had a quick play and went for it. Get it home all connected fine, logged into her Google account... but hang on... where is the Google Mail application?

Turns out Orange have butchered the OS and removed Google Mail, Google Talk and the Youtube app!! There is a hack to get Google Mail back on but it is not 100% stable as Orange have changed the permissions making looking at images or attachments in e-mails impossible as it forces the app crash. So it was either use the Orange email service (as if anyone would do that when they already have a Google mail account) or do what i've done and connect her to her Google e-mail using IMAP, not perfect but works fine for her.

I was most disappointed to find that not only have HTC added a naff overlay on top of the OS (hogging resources unnecessarily), Orange then have further ripped out some good bits! The odd thing is that Contacts and Calendars are synced from her Google account as normal.

So much for Android being about choice and integration with Google, not in the hands of Orange it would seem.

Orange: Sort this out ASAP! get an update out to users to give them the choice!

HTC + Orange = Crappy rom.

It's been the same as far back as I can remember. The day I got my new Touch HD I blew a much better ROM on it.

I was so excited to boot up my HTC TyTn II when I first bought it about 18 months ago. Only to discover Orange replaced the HTC theme with their own horribly ugly orange one, and then have gone on to not bundle TomTom SatNav software that should come with the phone free, and then also removed MSN Messenger from the phone.

Welcome to the world of Orange branding! Thats why I avoid them like the plague!

I'm looking forward to see what they do with the IPhone lol

have they messed around with the hero much? should be recieving one and all i had read about was they have blocked the default unlocking codes...

mine was orange branded, but i rooted it to put a faster rom on, which also removed all the orange guff, i cant remember it being that bad tho.

My Hero has the Orange formware (latest) and I can't see ANYTHING to do with Orange. All apps are stock. The only thing it seems to have is the default numbers for the message centre etc.

Well have to say the Mrs is happy with the IMAP setup she has running. Got a few emails from her today while she was shopping. Still you have to wonder why Orange keep ******* about with the phones software?!

Don't think this is orange is it? Only Google backed phones can distribute their propriety apps. Android is an opensource OS project its not tied to any of Googles closed apps.

Well the phone has gone back to the Orange shop as the lack of the apps has just got too much. Using IMAP to sync mail meant the notification sound went nuts and using ActiveSync with Google Mail meant it kept syncing contacts and calendar items twice!!!

So it went back to the shop today which they happily took back (surprised it was so easy). But thanks to the store manager who was very sympathetic and understood our problem quickly as others had taken their phones back cause Orange had screwed with it!

Just ordered a new Tattoo online from Vodafone. Same cost contract but with 100 mins extra!
