Finally can someone explain to me why the PS3 has not been hacked yet? I know very little about XBOX and have only ever played one a couple of times. PS3 however I own one and love it. I don't want anything like this to happen in the future with PS3. Why did XBOX get hacked and PS3 not? Apologies for my lack of knowledge on this but I just don't get why the PS3 has survived? Is it lack of anyone wanting to hack it based on the cost of BluRay digital media?

Cheers

Firstly, blu ray discs and reader/writer drives are too expensive to get the scene interested. Secondly no one has found a method/exploit to load from ISO image.

The 360 on the other hand has a bog standard PC type DVD drive with flashable firmware it was hacked around 6 months after release

Maybe your console ID was cloned, i know some people managed to unban themselves via some very complicated methods involving pinching someones console ID (the thing that is banned) and essentially flashing it to their own console.

This is exactly what I thought, but I have to admit while I've heard of it 'in the wild', I've certainly not heard of it actually becoming mainstream now.

That's stooping to all new lows, even for pirates.

Selfish cakeholes.

The xbox 360 itself hasn't really been hacked either, it's just that MS left a gaping security hole in the form of the DVD drive firmware. Basically, the hacked firmware fools the 360 into seeing the copied game as an original retail disc. The actual console itself remains untouched.

If somebody were to find a similar security hole in the PS3's drive firmware there is no reason why a similar hack wouldn't work, but it's more difficult because the PS3 uses a proprietary drive, where as the 360 uses standard SATA drives.

You can 'unban' early machines by flashing the NAND on the motherboard with the ID of a non-banned machine, but it's extremely easy for MS to detect this and it usually gets banned again pretty much straight away.

iirc they left debug code in the firmware on the 360's drive!

Kind of. Basically being a standard SATA drive it has a 'vendor mode' which allows flashing of firmware. MS have made various revisions of the drive making it difficult to put it into vendor mode, masking the drive key etc, but every time MS does this it's not long before ways to unlock them are found.

There is currently a brand-new revision of the Lite-on coming through on new machines that is not possible to hack at the moment, but give it a couple of months and no doubt it'll be cracked like the other revisions.

You were right about the account corruption by the way, that happened this time, whats odd though is that i had multiple live profiles on the drive and memory units and only the main profile was corrupted. Also as i have not played any games on it my saves are safe.

I don't see the point in taking the risk really, I rarely pay over £30 for games anyway! If you wait a few weeks after release they usually drop pretty fast.

dont be naiive m8, £30 per game or 50 games for the same mney. Its not hard to see why people pirate but it does annoy me when they moan about getting banned. Whenever a friend gets his console done he is warned about bans etc, but as soon as they hit even if said person has played £1000's worth of games they start ranting about how they hate MS and how crap the xbox is etc it wierd and just a bit pathetic.

I guess a lot of people who download never really get the full enjoyment out of the game though, play it for a bit then never play it again, at least if you pay good money for it, you're more likely to attempt to finish the thing.

Not to mention renting or buying second hand...

Thanks for the info guys. So at the risk of asking a silly question (apologies again for my noobism on 360s here) do XBOX's use standard DVD media and if so...how/why? I thought XBOX's gave a HD gaming experience? How can they do that on standard DVD-Rs?

Why does it need a HD media source? Games aren't Movies that require huge amouts of space to store the HD contect.

True. I still thought they needed a fair amount though. Obviously not. So the PS3 games I own are what type of media? Bluray surely?

They are on blu-ray discs but the actual data on many PS3 games doesn't come anywhere near to filling the disc. Indeed, many would fit on a standard dual-layer DVD....

I love the guy on BBC news who said 'I have downloaded about £600 of free games, and they just banned me without warning :( Microsoft is so horrible, they've lost me as a customer!'

Lolol?

Sorry mate, if you're a thief, I've got precisely zero sympathy for you. Go buy another brand new console b1tch!! And stop being such a thieving *****!

God I hate thieves. The really scummy part is the way somehow they actually believe they are better than your average gypsy shoplifter, lifting fags whilst his mate distracts the shopkeeper .... :( No mate -- you're a thief -- just like him.

Yeah made me laugh as well, I hope the Police catch up with him as well now, not getting onto live will be the least of his worries :D
