Disfigured newsreader for Five

If that is true, and I bet even you have your limits, I bet you are in a small minority though. Because it goes against human nature.

Of course we all have our limits, and as I said I expect to be in the minority - but I still think that it shouldn't be a minority, whether it be human nature as you stated or whether or not we've developed this intolerance is hard to say. What I am saying though, is that we should accept people in spite of their differences, certainly if other than looks alone there's absolutely no difference to the rest of us. :)

I agree and I am also in that minority but at the same time I thinks it's something that we need to get used to so that eventually people that are considered as being 'disfigured' are better accepted in society and are able to contribute in more public roles.

Okay, for your choice of girlfriend or wife, is appearance not important to you? I don't mean to the exclusion of all else, but she HAS to be attractive or it doesn't matter one jot how suitable she is in all other areas does it?

Here here.

It would be a shame to miss out on great people with a wealth of knowledge and skills, just because they look a bit different, or have some form of disability.

I expect they are about as well accepted now as they are ever likely to be. Most of us will do our best to treat them the same as we would anyone else, but I can't help but feel pity or sympathy for someone in such a position. Now chances are the person doesn't want my pity or sympathy but I can't help but feel that way, and also feel glad that I am not so afflicted.

I'm talking about strangers, performing a task, i.e. their job - and my interaction with them is no intimate or more than a fleeting moment, so my attraction to them is absolutely not a part of it. So I don't understand what my attractions to my girlfriends come into play? I will be attracted to certain type of women and not to others - just like I have friends whose wives/girlfriends do nothing for me at all, but yet they find one another attractive, does that make them any less worthy to be their girlfriend or wife just because I don't find them attractive? Does it make them less worthy to be my friends? Does it have an impact on my life in any way shape or form? Not at all.

I don't get what my attractions towards someone has to do with it though - but I'm probably just being foreign or thick.

Would you rather fly on an airline for example, where all the stewardesses were pretty females or where they were all horribly disfigured? Which would make your flight a more pleasant experience?

Ok so you've covered newsreaders, shop assistants and now air stewardesses. You say you're tolerant of people with disabilites/disfigurement, but when it comes to providing services, it would be preferable to have good looking, able men and women for any situation, no? That tolerance doesn't extend very far if they aren't suitable for a role in society.

I'm tolerant in the sense I don't consider them inferior 'people' and that I would treat them with the same respect and civility I would anyone else. But for certain roles I believe your appearance is important. Many, probably the vast majority of jobs, your appearance within reason is irrelevant and thus they people have plenty of other jobs to choose from. Note I'm not saying stewardesses/newsreaders/shop assistants have to be 'good looking' especially, just that they be of a certain standard.

Well I'm glad you do feel pity for them or sympathy as it makes you human! However you're no doubt right, they know they've been dealt a rubbish hand or have been unlucky and just get on with their life and whilst some may feel bitter most tend to just get on with it and not worry about it (I speak from experience as I have friends in such situations) - and wouldn't want any special attention.

However I think you're wrong that they won't be accepted any further... I think give it time people will slowly become more tolerant of people with unfortunate afflictions.

Look at it this way, scaring your body with tattoos and piercings was initially done to shock people - and sometimes still does... however now, it's less and less shocking to see someone with metal everywhere or tattoos, or people that look "different"... so we're making progress.

We of course, can only judge others by our own standards. As such if our standards are not on the same plane as others, there will conflicts, and disagreements. We can achieve tolerance, but it'll take time, effort and a bit of education. The reason why we must accept such things is that we don't want to live in a world of uniform looking people and "perfection" everywhere - imperfections makes the world great IMO.

I doubt that very much and tbh I'm very surprised you beleive that, our (societies) prejudices are always evolving.

Tattoos/piercings is an interesting one, it is a form of choosing to (arguably) disfigure yourself. Personally I find many of them distasteful, especially on a woman, but I agree that they have widespread acceptance nowadays.

So let's throw this into it.... if they chose to disfigure themselves, does that make them harder to tolerate or different to tolerate than people who have had no say on their disfigurement?

For me personally? Harder to tolerate. If someone has extreme facial piercings or tattoos for example, I find it very distasteful and have less respect for that person. I also hope we never see the day the news is presented by such a muppet ;)

I have a problem looking at people with multiple facial piercings. The worst ones are the people who purposefully make the holes in their ear lobes bigger and bigger. It makes me feel a little sick and at the same time I want to punch them for being attention seeking idiots.

Can, open.

Worms, everywhere.
